Aus Tiefer Not

Used With Tune: AUS TIEFER NOT

Great God, what do I see and hear!

Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 300 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Great God, what do I see and hear! The end of things created! The Judge of mankind doth appear, On clouds of glory seated; The trumpet sounds; the graves restore The dead which they contained before; Prepare, my soul, to meet Him. 2 The dead in Christ shall first arise, At the last trumpet's sounding, Caught up to meet Him in the skies, With joy their Lord surrounding; No gloomy fears their souls dismay; His presence sheds eternal day On those prepared to meet Him. 3 But sinners, filled with guilty fears, Behold His wrath prevailing, For they shall rise, and find their tears And sighs are unavailing; The day of grace is past and gone; Trembling they stand before the throne, All unprepared to meet Him. 4 O Christ, who diedst and yet dost live. To me impart Thy merit; My pardon seal, my sins forgive, And cleanse me by Thy Spirit. Beneath Thy cross I view the day When heaven and earth shall pass away, And thus prepare to meet Thee. Topics: Forgiveness of Sin; The Judgment; Ready to meet God; Resurrection of the Dead Used With Tune: OUT OF THE DEPTHS I CRY TO THEE

Out of the Depths I Cry to Thee

Author: M. Luther, 1483-1546 ; C. Winkworth, 1827-78 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 37 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Out of the depths I cry to Thee; Lord, hear me I implore Thee! Thy gracious ear incline to me; My prayer let come before Thee. On my misdeeds in mercy look O deign to blot them from Thy book Or who can stand before Thee? 2 Thy love and grace alone avail To blot out my transgression; The best and holiest deeds must fail To break sin's dread oppression. Before Thee none can boasting stand, But all must fear Thy strict demand And live alone by mercy. 3 Therefore my hope is in the Lord And not in mine own merit; It rests upon His faithful Word to them of contrite spirit That He is merciful and just-- This is my comfort and my trust. His help I wait with patience. 4 And though it tarry till the night And till the morning waken, My heart shall never doubt His might Nor count itself forsaken. Do thus, O ye of Israel's seed, Ye of the Spirit born indeed; Wait for your God's appearing. 5 Where'er the greatest sins abound, By grace they are exceeded; Thy helping hand is always found With aid where aid is needed. Our Shepherd good and true is He Who will at last His Israel free From all their sin and sorrow. Topics: Humility: Pharisee and Publican; Trinity 11 Scripture: Psalm 130 Used With Tune: AUS TIEFER NOT Text Sources: The New Congregational Hymn Book, 1859, tr. sts. 1, 5

From Depths of Woe I Raise to Thee

Author: Martin Luther Meter: 8.7.87.8.8.7 Appears in 11 hymnals Lyrics: 1. From depths of woe I raise to Thee The voice of lamentation; Lord, turn a gracious ear to me And hear my supplication; If Thou iniquities dost mark, Our secret sins and misdeeds dark, O who shall stand before Thee? 2. To wash away the crimson stain, Grace, grace alone availeth; Our works, alas! are all in vain; In much the best life faileth: No man can glory in Thy sight, All must alike confess Thy might, And live alone by mercy. 3. Therefore my trust is in the Lord, And not in mine own merit; On Him my soul shall rest, His Word Upholds my fainting spirit: His promised mercy is my fort, My comfort, and my sweet support; I wait for it with patience. 4. What though I wait the livelong night, And till the dawn appeareth, My heart still trusteth in His might; It doubteth not nor feareth: Do thus, O ye of Israel’s seed, Ye of the Spirit born indeed; And wait till God appeareth. 5. Though great our sins and sore our woes, His grace much more aboundeth; His helping love no limit knows, Our utmost need it soundeth. Our Shepherd good and true is He, Who will at last His Israel free. From all their sin and sorrow. Used With Tune: AUS TIEFER NOT Text Sources: Composite translation from German to English

Z głębokiej nędzy

Author: ks. Marcin Luter Appears in 2 hymnals First Line: Z głębokiej nędzy, w grzechu mym Lyrics: 1 Z głębokiej nędzy, w grzechu mym do Ciebie wołam, Panie! Ach, w miłosierdziu wielkim swym wysłuchaj me błaganie! 5 Choć ogrom wielki naszych win, możniejsza łaska Bosak, choć grzeszny każdy ludzki czyn, ratować Jego troska, On, dobry Pasterz, owce swe wybawić i odkupić chce od nieprawości wszelkich. Angielski: Out of the depths I cry to you; O Father, hear me calling. Incline your ear to my distress In spite of my rebelling. Do not regard my sinfuld eeds. Send me the grace my spirit needs; Without it I am nothing.
