Awake, O Church of Christ

Representative Text

1 Awake, O Church of Christ, awake,
And put your armor on;
The foe is pressing in on ev’ry side
For battle fierce and long;
The clarion call is ringing loud and strong
For soldiers brave and true;
Come, rally round the banner,
Satan’s hosts pursue.

2 Awake, O Church of Christ, awake,
And backward hurl the foe;
The fight is on, the conflict has begun,
And onward we must go;
Press forward in the name of Christ our King,
To shout the victor’s song;
Defying Satan’s mighty hosts,
For Christ march on.

3 Awake, O Church of Christ, awake,
The battle soon shall cease;
When Christ, our mighty Leader, shall appear
And bring enduring peace;
The pow’rs of darkness then shall be cast out,
Confusion mark their way;
So forward, soldiers of the cross,
To win the day.

Author: Harry D. Clarke

Orphaned at an early age, Clarke ran away from the orphanage and worked at sea for almost 10 years. He eventually moved to London, then to America. He attended the Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Illinois, then went into composing, music publishing, and evangelism. He served as song leader for Harry vom Bruch and Billy Sunday, being so impressed by Sunday that he established the Billy Sunday Memorial Chapel in Sioux City, Iowa (where he served as pastor until 1945). Clarke also worked in the evangelism field in Garards Fort, Pennsylvania, and South Milford, Indiana. © The Cyber Hymnal™. Used by permission. (www.hymntime.com) Go to person page >
