Stephen P. Starke
b. 1955 Person Name: Stephen P. Starke, b. 1955 Author of "Jesus, Greatest at the Table" in Lutheran Service Book Rev. Stephen P. Starke has always had a heart for hymns. At a young age, Starke played hymns out of The Lutheran Hymnal and read through the hymnal to pass the time before Sunday services.
Pastor Starke graduated from Concordia University Chicago with a BA. While completing his MDiv from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, he attempted his first hymn text and was encouraged to write more. Since that time, he has written more than 175 hymns inspired by music and the Scriptures. He has been commissioned to write hymns for special occasions, including the 125th anniversary of Concordia University Wisconsin, as well as his daughter’s wedding.
Because of his extensive work as a hymnwriter, Pastor Starke received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Concordia University, Irvine, California, and an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon.
It is through the medium of hymns that Pastor Starke desires to preserve and pass on the truths of the Gospel for generations to come.

Fred Pratt Green
1903 - 2000 Person Name: Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Author of "When our confidence is shaken" in Singing the Faith The name of the Rev. F. Pratt Green is one of the best-known of the contemporary school of hymnwriters in the British Isles. His name and writings appear in practically every new hymnal and "hymn supplement" wherever English is spoken and sung. And now they are appearing in American hymnals, poetry magazines, and anthologies.
Mr. Green was born in Liverpool, England, in 1903. Ordained in the British Methodist ministry, he has been pastor and district superintendent in Brighton and York, and now served in Norwich. There he continued to write new hymns "that fill the gap between the hymns of the first part of this century and the 'far-out' compositions that have crowded into some churches in the last decade or more."

Fred Pratt Green
Fred Kaan
1929 - 2009 Person Name: Fred Kaan, 1929-2009 Author of "For the Healing of the Nations" in Community of Christ Sings Fred Kaan Hymn writer. His hymns include both original work and translations. He sought to address issues of peace and justice. He was born in Haarlem in the Netherlands in July 1929. He was baptised in St Bavo Cathedral but his family did not attend church regularly. He lived through the Nazi occupation, saw three of his grandparents die of starvation, and witnessed his parents deep involvement in the resistance movement. They took in a number of refugees. He became a pacifist and began attending church in his teens.
Having become interested in British Congregationalism (later to become the United Reformed Church) through a friendship, he was attended Western College in Bristol. He was ordained in 1955 at the Windsor Road Congregational Church in Barry, Glamorgan.
In 1963 he was called to be minister of the Pilgrim Church in Plymouth. It was in this congregation that he began to write hymns. The first edition of Pilgrim Praise was published in 1968, going into second and third editions in 1972 and 1975. He continued writing many more hymns throughout his life.

1906 - 1980 Person Name: Moir A. J. Waters, b. 1906 Author of "Herald, Sound the Note of Judgment" in Lutheran Book of Worship Waters, Moir Alexander James. (Ujjain, India, January 15, 1906--January 15, 1980, London, Ontario). United Church of Canada. University of Toronto, B.A., 1928; ordination after study at Emmanuel College, 1931. Pastorates in Toronto, 1931-1932, 1945; Newton-on-Ayr (Scotland), 1932-1933; London (Ont.), 1933-1940, 1959-1973; Victoria, British Columbia, 1945-1955; Burlington, Ont., 1955-1959. He spent 1940-1945 in India, not far from where his father had built a hospital with the local maharajah's blessing, teaching at Indore Theological Seminary and evangelizing in nearby villages. After his retirement, he published privately three small collections of hymns he had written since returning to Canada, of which only one for Advent, "Herald! sound the note of judgment," had already become widely known.

b. 1938 Person Name: David Mowbray (born 1938) Author of "Risen Lord, whose name we cherish" in Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) David Mowbray (b. 1938) was born in Wallington, Surrey, England. He attended Dulwich College, Fitzwilliam, Cambridge where he read English. He gained an MA at Trinity in Bristol and a BD at London (External). Ordained in the Church of England, he was a curate at St. Giles in Northampton and at St. Mary's in Walford. Appointed Vicar of Broxborne, Herts in 1970 in 1984, he became Vicar of All Saints, Hertfordshire. In 1991 he became Vicar of St. Matthew's Darley Abbey, Derby, where he serves to this day. He has been writing hymns since 1977 and most of his texts are represented by Jubilate Hymns. Three of his hymn texts have been included in Hope's new hymnal Worship & Rejoice (2001).

David Mowbray
Sarah Poulton Kalley
1825 - 1907 Author of "Luz do mundo, Jesus Cristo" in Hinário Luterano Born in Nottingaham, England in 1825. Married Scottish physician and missionary Robert Reid Kalley. Together they went to Brazil. She wrote many hymns and was instrumental in organizing Salmos e Hinos the first Brazilian evangelical hymnal in the Portuguese language, first used at Igreja Evangélica Fluminense in 1861.
