Psalm 9: Lord, thee I'll praise with all my heart

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 13 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 9 First Line: Lord, thee I'll praise with all my heart Lyrics: 1Lord, thee I’ll praise with all my heart, thy wonders all proclaim. 2In thee, most High, I’ll greatly joy, and sing unto thy name. 3When back my foes were turn’d, they fell, and perish’d at thy sight: 4For thou maintain’dst my right and cause; on throne sat’st judging right. 5The heathen thou rebuked hast, the wicked overthrown; Thou hast put out their names, that they may never more be known. 6O en’my! now destructions have an end perpetual: Thou cities raz’d; perish’d with them is their memorial. 7God shall endure for aye; he doth for judgment set his throne; 8In righteousness to judge the world, justice to give each one. 9God also will a refuge be for those that are oppress’d; A refuge will he be in times of trouble to distress’d. 10And they that know thy name, in thee their confidence will place: For thou hast not forsaken them that truly seek thy face. 11O sing ye praises to the Lord, that dwells in Sion hill; And all the nations among his deeds record ye still. 12When he enquireth after blood, he then rememb’reth them: The humble folk he not forgets that call upon his name. 13Lord, pity me; behold the grief which I from foes sustain; Ev’n thou, who from the gates of death dost raise me up again; 14That I, in Sion’s daughters’ gates, may all thy praise advance; And that I may rejoice always in thy deliverance. 15The heathen are sunk in the pit which they themselves prepar’d; And in the net which they have hid their own feet fast are snar’d. 16The Lord is by the judgment known which he himself hath wrought: The sinners’ hands do make the snares wherewith themselves are caught. 17They who are wicked into hell each one shall turned be; And all the nations that forget to seek the Lord most high. 18For they that needy are shall not forgotten be alway; The expectation of the poor shall not be lost for aye. 19Arise, Lord, let not man prevail; judge heathen in thy sight: 20That they may know themselves but men, the nations, Lord, affright.

Wholehearted Thanksgiving to You I Will Bring

Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 9 Lyrics: 1 Wholehearted thanksgiving to you I will bring; in praise of your marvelous works I will sing. For joy I will shout and exultingly cry in praise of your name, LORD my God, O Most High. 2 My foes were turned backward in utter despair; they stumbled and perished because you were there. For you have defended my right and my cause; you sat in just judgment, upholding your laws. 3 You chided the nations, the wicked destroyed; their names you erased and forever made void. The foe is consumed and completely disgraced, their cities uprooted, their memory erased. 4 The LORD will eternally sit on his throne, establishing it for his judgment alone. He righteously judges the world with his might; all peoples will know that his judgment is right. 5 The LORD is a stronghold, a bulwark, a tower, for all the oppressed in their dark troubled hour. Those knowing your name, LORD, trust you for your grace; you have not forsaken those seeking your face. 6 Sing praise to the LORD, who in Zion does dwell; among all the peoples his mighty deeds tell. The cry of the poor never fades from his ear; their blood he avenges; he always will hear. 7 LORD, see what I suffer from malice and hate. Have mercy! O lift me away from death's gate, that I with the Daughter of Zion may voice your praises, and in your salvation rejoice. 8 The nations are sunk in the pit they prepared; their feet in the net which they hid are ensnared. The LORD by his judgment has made himself known, and by their own works are the wicked o'erthrown. 9 The wicked shall perish in death's dark abode, with all of the lands who are heedless of God. No longer forget the just cause of the weak, nor banish forever the hope of the meek. 10 Arise, LORD, let sinners not think themselves strong; let peoples be judged in your presence for wrong. Strike terror within them, O LORD; make them see that nations, though pompous, must still bend the knee. To celebrate thy Praise, O Lord

Appears in 41 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 9 Lyrics: 1 To celebrate thy Praise, O Lord, I will my Heart prepare; To all the list'ning World thy Works, thy wond'rous Works, declare. 2 The Thought of them shall to my Soul exalted Pleasure bring; Whilst to thy Name, O thou most High, triumphant Praise I sing. 3 Thou mad'st my haughty Foes to turn their Backs in shameful Flight: Struck with thy Presence, down they fell; they perish'd at thy Sight. 4 Against insulting Foes advanc'd, thou didst my Cause maintain; My Right asserting from thy Throne, where Truth and Justice reign. 5 The Insolence of Heathen pride thou hast reduc'd to Shame; Their wicked offspring quite destroy'd, and blotted out their Name. 6 Mistaken Foes, your haughty Threats are to a period come: Our City stands, which you design'd to make our common Tomb. 7, 8 The Lord for ever lives, who has his righteous Throne prepar'd; Impartial Justice to dispense, to punish or reward. 9 God is a constant sure Defence against oppressing Rage; As Troubles rise, his needful Aids in our Behalf engage. 10 All those who have his Goodness prov'd, will in his Truth confide; Whose Mercy ne'er forsook the Man that on his Help rely'd. 11 Sing Praises therefore to the Lord, from Sion his Abode; Proclaim his Deeds, till all the world confess no other God. Part II 12 When he Inquiry makes for Blood, he calls the poor to Mind; The injur'd humble Man's Complaint, redress from him shall find. 13 Take Pity on my Troubles, Lord, which spiteful Foes create, Thou that hast rescu'd me so oft from Death's devouring Gate. 14 In Sion then I'll sing thy Praise, to all that love thy Name; And with loud Shouts of grateful Joy thy saving Pow'r proclaim. 15 Deep in the Pit they digg'd for me the Heathen Pride is laid; Their guilty Feet to their own Snare insensibly betray'd. 16 Thus, by the just Returns he makes, the mighty Lord is known; While wicked Men by their own Plots are shamefully o'erthrown. 17 No single Sinner shall escape by Privacy obscur'd; Nor Nation, from his just Revenge, by Numbers be secru'd. 18 His suff'ring Saints, when most distress'd, he ne'er forgets to aid; Their Expectations shall be crown'd, tho' for a time delay'd. 19 Arise, O Lord, assert thy Pow'r, and let not man o'ercome; Descend to Judgment, and pronounce the guilty Heathens Doom. 20 Strike Terror thro' the Nations round, till, by consenting Fear, They to each other, and themselves, but mortal Men appear.

To celebrate thy Name, O LORD!

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 9 Lyrics: 1 To celebrate thy Name, O LORD! My Heart and Voice, in one Accord With grateful Joy, I will declare To Men thy Works, which wond'rous are. 2 Thy Thought of them to me shall bring Exalted Pleasure whilst I sing: My thankful Soul shall strive to raise, To thee, my GOD, triumphant Praise. 3 When those who did against me rise, Have fled with Shame, struck with Surprize, Terror shall seize them in their Flight; They fall and perish at thy Sight. 4 Against my Life they strove in vain; For thou didst still my Cause maintain; My Right asserting from thy Throne, Where Justice reigns, and Truth is known. 5 The Insolence of heathen Pride, O GOD of Truth, thou wilt deride; Their Offspring shall be low debas'd, Their Names with Infamy disgrac'd. Part II: 6 Mistaken Foes, your ill Design, Quite vanquish'd, now you must resign; Our City yet remains secure, Altho' you thought its Ruin sure. 7 For GOD, the LORD, entrhon'd on high, Is with impartial Justice nigh: His Judgment-Seat he hath prepar'd; As well to punish as reward. 8 There shall he sit in Righteousness, And ev'ry secret Wrong redress: His Anger will his Foes destroy, His Saints shall still his Smiles enjoy. 9 GOD is a constant sure Defence Against oppressing Insolence; And when our Foes exert their Rage, He will in our Behalf engage. 10 All those who have his Goodness known, Will look for Help to GOD alone; His Mercy never will neglect Those who his holy Name respect. Part III: 11 Oh join your Hearts in one Accord, From Sion's Hill bless ye the LORD: His Deeds throughout the World proclaim, 'Till all revere his holy Name. 12 When he Inquiry makes for Guilt! The Blood of Saints by Sinners spilt; He calls to Mind the Poor distress'd, And all their Wrongs are soon redress'd. 13 Then pity, LORD, my troubled State, Dispel the Grief my Foes create; Thou who dost oft my Pray'r attend, And in Distress Assistance lend. 14 That I in Zion may proclaim Thy Praise to all who love thy Name, And in loud Shouts of grateful Joy, My Heart and Tongue, and Voice employ. 15 Deep in the Pit design'd for me The Heathen Pride shall humbled be; Their Feet insensibly ensnar'd, where they my Ruin had prepar'd. 16 Thus, by his Judgments, GOD is known; All Nations must his Justice own; The Wicked he will low debase, And by their own Designs disgrace. 17 In Hell the Sinner shall be cast, Mid Torments which must ever last: None are by Privacy obscur'd; None shall by Numbers be secur'd. 18 His suff'ring Saints, when most distress'd, Are by his timely Aid redress'd; Tho' for a While in Sorrows drown'd, Their Hope shall with Success be crown'd, 19 Arise, O LORD! to Judgment come, Pronounce the guilty Heathen's Doom; Let not thy Foes thy Saints devour; But crush them by Almighty Pow'r. 20 Strike Terror through the Nations round; The heathen Pride, O LORD! confound; And let them by consenting Fear, No more than mortal Men appear. When the great Judge, supreme and just

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 55 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 9:6-13 Lyrics: 1 When the great Judge, supreme and just, Shall once inquire for blood; The humble souls that mourn in dust Shall find a faithful God. 2 He from the dreadful gates of death Does his own children raise; In Zion’s gates with cheerful breath, They sing their Father’s praise. 3 His foes shall fall with heedless feet, Into the pit they made; And sinners perish in the net That their own hands have spread. 4. Thus by thy judgment, mighty God, Are thy deep counsels known; When men of mischief are destroy'd, The snare must be their own. 5 The wicked shall sink down to hell; Thy wrath devour the lands That dare forget thee, or rebel Against thy known commands. 6 Though saints to sore distress are brought, And wait, and long complain, Their cries shall never be forgot, Nor shall their hopes be vain. 7 [Rise, great Redeemer, from thy seat, To judge and save the poor; Let nations tremble at thy feet, And man prevail no more. 8 Thy thunder shall affright the proud, And put their hearts to pain, Make them confess, that thou art God, And they but feeble men.] Topics: The Wisdom and Equity of Providence

Give thanks for deeds of steadfast love, for wonders new and old: for fire and cloud, for daily food, for mercies yet untold. 2 Though monuments of evil rise in marble, gilt, and stone, time’s search will find their boasts untrue, their makers’ names unknown. Mute avenues of ruins will mark where once proud cities stood, but from destruction God will save the faithful, just, and good. 3 Rise up, O God, reclaim the power usurped by mortal pride, deflate the hollow pomp of those whom rank and titles hide. Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 76 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 9:1-11 Lyrics: Lord, at thy temple we appear, As happy Simeon came, And hope to meet our Savior here; O make our joys the same! With what divine and vast delight The good old man was filled, When fondly in his withered arms He clasped the holy child! "Now I can leave this world," he cried, "Behold, thy servant dies; I've seen thy great salvation, Lord, And close my peaceful eyes. "This is the light prepared to shine Upon the Gentile lands, Thine Isr'el's glory, and their hope To break their slavish bands." [Jesus! the vision of thy face Hath overpowering charms; Scarce shall I feel death's cold embrace, If Christ be in my arms. Then while ye hear my heart-strings breuk, How sweet my minutes roll! A mortal paleness on my cheek, And glory in my soul.]

Sing to the Lord, who loud proclaims

Appears in 73 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 9 Lyrics: 1 Sing to the Lord, who loud proclaims His various, and his saving Names; O may they not be heard alone, But by our sure Experience known! 2 The great Jehovah be ador'd, Th' Eternal, All-sufficient Lord, He thro' the World most high confess'd, By whom 'twas form'd, and is possess'd. 3 Awake, our noblest Pow'rs, to bless The God of Abr'am, God of Peace; Now by a dearer Title known, Father and God of Christ his son. 4 Thro' ev'ry Age his gracious Ear Is open to his Servants Prayer; Nor can one humble Soul complain, That he hath fought his God in vain. 5 What unbelieving Heart shall dare In Whispers to suggest a Fear, While still he owns his antient Name? The same his Pow'r, his Love the same! 6 To Thee our Souls in Faith arise, To Thee we lift expecting Eyes; And boldly thro' the Desart tread: For God will guard, where God shall lead.

There's a Voice in the Wilderness

Author: James Lewis Milligan (1876-1961) Meter: Irregular Appears in 24 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 9 First Line: There's a voice in the wilderness crying Lyrics: 1 There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod: prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God! The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low; make straight all the crooked places, where the Lord our God may go! 2 O Zion, give voice to good tidings, ascend to the heights and sing! Proclaim to a desolate people the coming of their King. The works of pride all perish, like flowers they shall decay; the power and pomp of nations shall pass like a dream away. 3 But your word, O God, is faithful, your arm, O Lord, is strong; you stand in the midst of nations, and you will right the wrong. You will feed your flock like a shepherd, and fold the lambs to your breast; in pastures of peace you’ll lead them, and give to the weary rest. 4 There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod: prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God! The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low; make straight all the crooked places, where the Lord our God may go! Topics: Advent; John, the Baptist Used With Tune: ASCENSION

By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered

O give our frightened souls the sure salvation for which, O Lord, you taught us to prepare. 3 And when this cup you give is filled to brimming with bitter suffering, hard to understand, we take it thankfully and without trembling, out of so good, and so beloved, a hand. 4 Yet when again, in this same world, you give us the joy we had, the brightness of your sun, we shall remember all the days we lived through, and our whole life shall then be yours alone. O Lord, Thou Judge of All the Earth

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 10 hymnals Scripture: Psalms 8-13 Lyrics: 1 O Lord, thou Judge of all the earth, to whom all vengeance doth belong, arise and show thy glory forth, requite the proud, condemn the wrong. 2 How long, O Lord, in boastful pride shall wicked men triumphant stand? How long shall they afflict thy saints and scorn thy wrath, thy dreadful hand? 3 Be wise, ye fools and brutish men; shall not he see, who formed the eye? Shall not he hear, who formed the ear, and judge, who reigneth, God Most High? 4 The Lord will judge in righteousness, from him all truth and knowledge flow; the foolish thoughts of wicked men, how vain they are the Lord doth know. 5 That man is blest whom thou, O Lord, with chast'ning hand dost teach thy will, for in the day when sinners fall, that man in peace abideth still. 6 Unless the Lord had been my help, my life had quickly passed away; but when my foot had almost slipped, O Lord, thy mercy was my stay. Refrain: Come, O come, Where mercy and pardon are boundless and free; Then haste with thy burden of sin and of sorrow, Thy gracious Redeemer is waiting for thee. 2 O come, weary one, for the day beams are fading; Say, why on the desert afar wilt thou roam? The arms of the Saviour will gladly enfold thee, He longs with forgiveness to welcome thee home.
