Barbauld, Anna Laetitia, née Aikin, daughter of the Rev. John Ailrin, D.D., a dissenting minister, was b. at Kibworth-Harcourt, Leicestershire, June 20, 1743. In 1753 Dr. Aikin became classical tutor at a dissenting academy at Warrington. During her residence there she contributed five hymns to Dr. W. Enfield's Hymns for Public Worship, &c, Warrington, 1772. In the following year these were included in her Poems, Lond., J. Johnson, 1773. In May, 1774, Miss Aikin was married to the Rev. Rochemont Barbauld, a descendant of a French Protestant family, and a dissenting minister. T'ingfang Lew was a leading Chinese educator, author, and editor. He was educated in China and at Columbia University in New York City (M.A.; Ph.D.). His Bachelor of Divinity degree was from Yale and he studied at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, where he also taught Christian education. Lew lectured throughout America at schools and colleges from 1926 to 1938 and received an S.T.D. degree from Oberlin College. In 1932, Lew began to chair the commission to prepare a Chinese Union hymnal. The resulting Hymns of Universal Praise was published in 1936. Ernest Yinliu Yang (b. Wuxi,Jiangsu, China, 1899; d. China, 1984), served on the committee that prepared the interdenominational Chinese hymnbook Hymns of Universal Praise (1936). He wrote over two hundred hymns, including melodies, arrangements, translations, and original texts. Regarded as an outstanding musicologist in China, he is known especially for his important two-volume history of ancient music in China, Zhongkuo Gudai Yinyue Shigao (1944). A graduate of St. John's University in Shanghai and Guanghua University, Yang taught at Yanjing University, the National Conservatory of Music, and Jinling Women's University.
