William Thomas Jr. was born in 1947 in Columbus, Ohio. After a career on Broadway he came to Hollywood, where he appeared in a variety of popular television program (including a recurring role in the final season of The Cosby Show), while also serving as organist and later music director for congregations of the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ). He earned a doctorate at the Claremont School of Theology, and was called to be senior pastor at Little White Chapel in Burbank.
