Teach us, O loving heart of Christ

Author: Shirley Erena Murray (b. 1931) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Luke 23:32-48 Lyrics: 1 Teach us, O loving heart of Christ, what only love can say: 'Father, forgive' and still forgive the blindness of our way. 2 Torn is the world you came to save, it bleeds from hands and side: slow is your Church to bear the scars of suffering love that died. 3 We have not found your way of peace, though lack of peace is death: we have not fed with word or bread the hungry of the earth. 4 Christ in whose hands were thrust the nails, who yet for us could pray: forgive the things we have not done, the words we do not say. Topics: Our Response to Christ In Penitence; Food and Hunger; Forgiveness; Justice and Peace; Suffering Used With Tune: KHANDALLAH

Ye wretched sons of men draw near

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Luke 23 Lyrics: 1 Ye wretched sons of men draw near, The cries and groans of Jesus hear; Come see the blessed lamb of God, There shedding of his precious Blood, 2 Behold him wounded scourg'd & bruis'd Mock'd, and slander'd, and abus'd; O hear his cries upon the tree: Why hath my God forsaken me! 3 His pain, his anguish, and distress, No heart can feel, no tongue express; When all the powers of Hell broke in, And Christ bore all the weight of sin. 4 When Jesus to the Cross was nail'd, The Sun was all in darkness vail'd; The Rocks were rent when Jesus cried! The earth was shaken when he died. 5 The heavens their black curtains drew, Such mournful scenes they could not view; It was too much for human eye, To see the King of Glory die. 6 How dark and awful was the day, When Jesus died to take away; Our curse and punishment and pain, For which he died and rose again. All is ready for the Feast!

Author: Frederick Pratt Green (1903-2000) Meter: 7.7.7 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Luke 23:32-44 Lyrics: 1 All is ready for the Feast! Every Jew is wondering how God will liberate them now. 2 Pilate, fearful of revolt he, at all costs, must avert, puts the Legion on alert. 3 Listen! Galilean crowds hail the Man from Nazareth, Jesus, riding to his death. 4 What authority he wields! With a whip of cords he clears temple courts of profiteers! 5 Watched by priests and pharisees, all he says and all he does fans the hatred of his foes. 6 Now he gathers those he loves in a room where bread and wine turn to sacrament and sign. 7 In that dark betrayal night, moved by hope, or fear or greed, Judas sets about his deed. 8 Jesus in the olive grove, waiting for a traitor's kiss, rises free from bitterness. 9 As he wakes his comrades up torches flicker in the glen, shadows turn to marching men. 10 In that dawn of blows and lies Church and State conspire to kill, hang three rebels on a hill. 11 Innocent and guilty drown in a flood of blood and sweat, how much darker can it get? 12 How much darker must it be for a God to see and care that men perish in despair? 13 It is God himself who dies! God in man shall set us free, God as Man - and only he. 14 Let him claim us as his own, we will serve as best we can such a God and such a Man! Final verse: 15 What does our salvation cost? Jesus, we shall never know all you gave and all we owe. Topics: Christ Incarnate Passion and Death; Christian Year Holy Week Used With Tune: HEILIGER GEIST

O sacred head sore wounded

Author: Paul Gerhardt, 1607-76; Bernard of Clairvaux, 1091-1153; James Waddell Alexander, 1804-59 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 724 hymnals Scripture: Luke 23:32-34 Lyrics: 1 O sacred head sore wounded, with grief and shame weighed down; O kingly head surrounded with thorns your only crown; death's shadows rise before you, the glow of life decays; yet hosts of heaven adore you and tremble as they gaze. 2 What language shall I borrow to praise you, heavenly friend, for this your dying sorrow, your mercy without end? Such agony and dying! Such love to sinners free! O Christ, all grace supplying, turn now your face on me. 3 In this your bitter Passion, good Shepherd, think of me, look on me with compassion, unworthy though I be: beneath your cross abiding for ever would I rest, in your dear love confiding, and with your presence blessed. 4 Lord, be my consolation, my shield when death is near; remind me of your Passion, be with me when I fear. My eyes shall then behold you, upon your cross shall dwell, my heart by faith enfold you; and who dies thus, dies well. The Son of Man lifted up

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 643 hymnals Scripture: Luke 23:33-34 First Line: He dies! the friend of sinners dies! Lyrics: 1 He dies! the friend of sinners dies! Lo Salem’s daughters weep around! A solemn darkness veils the skies! A sudden trembling shakes the ground! Come, saints, and drop a tear or two, For Him who groan'd beneath your load! He shed a thousand drops for you! A thousand drops of richer blood! 2 Here’s love and grief beyond degree, The Lord of Glory dies for men! But lo! what sudden joys we see! Jesus the dead revives again! The rising God forsakes the tomb! In tomb in vain forbids his rise! Cherubic legions guard him home, And shout him welcome to the skies! 3 Break off your tears, ye Saints! and tell How high your great deliv'rer reigns! Sing how He spoil'd the hosts of hell, And led the monster death in chains: Say, “live for ever, wond'rous King!" Born to redeem, and strong to save! Then ask the monster— "Where’s thy sting? And were’s thy vict’ry boasting grave?" Topics: The Death of Jesus, who Died for All; Who tasted Death for Every Man Text Sources: Whitfield's Coll.

You have suffered to release us, Hope, salvation, joy to bring. Hail, O agonizing Savior, bearer of our sin and shame; by your merits we find favor; life is given through your name. 2 Paschal Lamb, by God appointed, all our sins on you were laid; by almighty love anointed, you have full atonement made. All your people are forgiven through the virtue of your blood; opened is the gate of heaven; we are reconciled to God. 3 Jesus! Heav'nly hosts adore you, seated at your Father's side. Crucified this world once saw you; now in glory you abide. There for sinners you are pleading, And our place you now prepare, ever for us interceding, till in glory we appear. 4 Worship, honor, pow'r and blessing you are worthy to receive; loudest praises without ceasing, right it is for us to give. Help, O bright angelic spirits, all your noblest anthems raise, help us sing our Savior's merits, help to chant Immanuel's praise. Beneath the Cross of Jesus

Author: Elizabeth Cecilia Clephane Meter: 7.6.8.6.8.6.8.6 Appears in 522 hymnals Scripture: Luke 23:33-49 Lyrics: 1 Beneath the cross of Jesus I long to take my stand; the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land, a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heat and burdens of the day. 2 Upon the cross of Jesus, my eye by faith can see the very dying form of one who suffered there for me. And from my contrite heart, with tears, two wonders I confess: the wonder of his glorious love and my unworthiness. 3 The shadow of your cross, Lord, be my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of your face; content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss, my sinful self my only shame, my glory all, your cross. Topics: Lent; Christian year--Lent; Humility Used With Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER
