Now may the God of pow'r and grace

Hymnal: Dr. Watts's Imitation of the Psalms of David #47 (1790) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 20 Lyrics: 1 Now may the God of pow'r and grace Attend the people’s humble cry! Jehovah hears when Israel prays, And brings deliverance from on high. 2 The name of Jacob's God defends, When bucklers fail and brazen walls; He from his sanctuary sends Succor and strength when Zion calls. 3 Well he remembers all our sighs, His love exceeds our best deserts; His love accepts the sacrifice Of humble groans and broken hearts. 4 In his salvation is our hope, And in the name of Isr'l's God Our troops shall lift their banners up, Our navies spread their flags abroad. 5 Some trust in horses train'd for war, And some of chariots make their boasts; Our surest expectations are From thee, the Lord of heav'nly hosts. 6 [O may the mem'ry of thy name Inspire our armies for the fight! Our foes shall fall and die with shame, Or quit the field with coward flight.] 7 Now save us, Lord, from slavish fear, Now let our hope be firm and strong, Till thy salvation shall appear, And joy and triumph raise the song. Not Alone for Mighty Empire

Author: William P. Merrill Hymnal: Hymns for the Living Church #521 (1974) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: Psalm 20:7 Lyrics: 1 Not alone for mighty empire Stretching far o'er land and sea; Not alone for bounteous harvests, Lift we up our hearts to Thee. Standing in the living present, Memory and hope between, Lord, we would with deep thanksgiving Praise Thee most for things unseen. 2 Not for battleship and fortress, Not for conquests of the sword; But for conquests of the spirit Give we thanks to Thee, O Lord; For the heritage of freedom, For the home, the church, the school; For the open door to manhood In a land the people rule. 3 For the armies of the faithful, Souls that passed and left no name; For the glory that illumines Patriot lives of deathless fame; For our prophets and apostles, Loyal to the living Word; For all heroes of the spirit, Give we thanks to Thee, O Lord. Amen. Topics: Anniversaries; Brotherhood Languages: English Tune Title: HYFRYDOL

All my hope on God is founded

Author: Joachim Neander (1650-1680); Robert Bridges (1844-1930) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #192a (2005) Meter: 8.7.8.7.3.3.7 Scripture: Psalm 20:7-8 Lyrics: 1 All my hope on God is founded, all my trust he will renew; safe through change and chance he guides me, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own. 2 Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray God's trust; though with care and toil we build them, tower and temple fall to dust. But God's power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. 3 God's great goodness lasts for ever, deep his wisdom passing thought: splendour, light, and life attend him, beauty springing out of naught. Evermore, from his store new-born worlds rise and adore. 4 Day by day the mighty Giver showers gifts on us below; his desire our souls delight in, pleasure leads us where we go. See love stand at his hand, joy awaits at his command! 5 Still from earth to God in heaven sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Hear Christ call one and all: those who follow shall not fall. Topics: Our Response to God in adoration and gratitude; Change; Hope; Providence Languages: English Tune Title: MICHAEL

I Bind unto Myself Today

Author: Patrick of Ireland (389?-461?); Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #436 (1998) Meter: Irregular Scripture: Psalm 20 Lyrics: 1 I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three-in-One, and One-in-Three. 2 I bind this day to me for ever, by power of faith, Christ's incarnation, his baptism in the Jordan river, his death on cross for my salvation. His bursting from the spiced tomb, his riding up the heavenly way, his coming at the day of doom, I bind unto myself today. 3 I bind unto myself today the virtues of the starlit heaven, the glorious sun's life-giving ray, the whiteness of the moon at even, the flashing of the lightning free, the whirling wind's tempestuous shocks, the stable earth, the deep salt sea, around the old eternal rocks. 4 I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead, his eye to watch, his might to stay, his ear to hearken to my need, the wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward; the word of God to give me speech, his heavenly host to be my guard. 5 Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. 6 I bind unto myself the name, the strong name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three-in-One, and One-in-Three. of whom all nature hath creation, eternal Father, Spirit, Word. Praise to the Lord of my salvation, salvation is of Christ the Lord. Topics: Call and Vocation; Covenant; Ordination; Trinity Languages: English Tune Title: ST. PATRICK'S BREASTPLATE

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #663 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 20 Lyrics: Must friends and kindred droop and die, And helpers be withdrawn? While sorrow with a weeping eye Counts up our comforts gone? Be thou our comfort, mighty God! Our helper and our friend; Nor leave us in this dangerous road, Till all our trials end. O may our feet pursue the way Our pious fathers led! With love and holy zeal obey The counsels of the dead. Let us be weaned from all below, Let hope our grief expel, While death invites our souls to go Where our best kindred dwell. Languages: English
