Onward! Christian soldiers

Author: Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #514 (2005) Meter: 6.5.6.5 D with refrain Scripture: Psalm 20:5 Lyrics: 1 Onward! Christian soldiers, marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before. Christ, the royal Master leads against the foe; forward into battle, see! his banners go: [Refrain:] Onward! Christian soldiers, marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before. 2 At the sign of triumph Satan's legions flee; on then, Christian soldiers, on to victory! Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise; lift your hearts and voices, loud your anthems raise: [Refrain] 3 Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane, but the Church of Jesus constant will remain; gates of hell can never 'gainst that Church prevail; we have Christ's own promise, and that cannot fail: [Refrain] 4 Onward, then, you people, join our happy throng; blend with ours your voices in the triumph song: 'Glory, laud, and honour unto Christ the King!' This through countless ages, we with angels sing: [Refrain] Topics: Life in Christ Our Response to Christ - In Discipleship; Church images of; Conflict; Jesus cross; Victory Languages: English Tune Title: ST. O God, Our Help in Ages Past

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #84 (2003) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 20:2 Lyrics: 1 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home. 2 Under the shadow of your throne your saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is your arm alone, and our defense is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood or earth received her frame, from everlasting you are God, to endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in your sight are like an evening gone, short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever rolling stream, bears all of us away; we fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be now our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home. Hallelujah! Lyrics: 1 Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on. Refrain: Glory! glory! Hallelujah! Glory! glory! Hallelujah! Glory! glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on. 2 I have seen Him in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps; They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps; His day is marching on. [Refrain] 3 He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting the hearts of men before His judgment seat; O be swift, my soul, to answer Him; be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on. [Refrain] 4 In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me; As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free! The Star-Spangled Banner

Author: Francis S. Key, 1779-1843 Hymnal: African American Heritage Hymnal #606 (2001) Meter: Irregular Scripture: Psalm 20:7 First Line: O say can you see by the dawn's early light Lyrics: 1 O say can you see by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? 2 On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dead silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows half conceals, half discloses? And catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines on the stream, 'Tis the Star-Spangled Banner O long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! 3 O thus be it ever when free men shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation! Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
