Shirley Erena Murray

1931 - 2020 Person Name: Shirley Erena Murray (b. 1931) Scripture: Isaiah 11:6-9 Author of "Touch the earth lightly" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Shirley Erena Murray (b. Invercargill, New Zealand, 1931) studied music as an undergraduate but received a master’s degree (with honors) in classics and French from Otago University. Her upbringing was Methodist, but she became a Presbyterian when she married the Reverend John Stewart Murray, who was a moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Shirley began her career as a teacher of languages, but she became more active in Amnesty International, and for eight years she served the Labor Party Research Unit of Parliament. Her involvement in these organizations has enriched her writing of hymns, which address human rights, women’s concerns, justice, peace, the integrity of creation, and the unity of the church. Many of her hymns have been performed in CCA and WCC assemblies. In recognition for her service as a writer of hymns, the New Zealand government honored her as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit on the Queen’s birthday on 3 June 2001. Through Hope Publishing House, Murray has published three collections of her hymns: In Every Corner Sing (eighty-four hymns, 1992), Everyday in Your Spirit (forty-one hymns, 1996), and Faith Makes the Song (fifty hymns, 2002). The New Zealand Hymnbook Trust, for which she worked for a long time, has also published many of her texts (cf. back cover, Faith Makes the Song). In 2009, Otaga University conferred on her an honorary doctorate in literature for her contribution to the art of hymn writing. Marty Haugen

b. 1950 Person Name: Marty Haugen, b. 1950 Scripture: Isaiah 11:1-10 Author of "Holy Child Within the Manger (Carol at the Manger)" in With One Voice Marty Haugen (b. 1950), is a prolific liturgical composer with many songs included in hymnals across the liturgical spectrum of North American hymnals and beyond, with many songs translated into different languages. He was raised in the American Lutheran Church, received a BA in psychology from Luther College, yet found his first position as a church musician in a Roman Catholic parish at a time when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing profound liturgical and musical changes after Vatican II. Finding a vocation in that parish to provide accessible songs for worship, he continued to compose and to study, receiving an MA in pastoral studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota. A number of liturgical settings were prepared for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and more than 400 of his compositions are available from several publishers, especially GIA Publications, who also produced some 30 recordings of his songs. Gary Daigle

His first compositions for musical liturgy were collaborations with the Dameans on the collection Remember Your Love (1978). Gary continues to work with the Dameans as a composer, arranger, and producer. In 1993, he released Praise the Maker’s Love, his first collection under his own name. More recent collaborations have been with Rory Cooney. Gary has produced all of Rory's most recent collections and he has set a number of Rory's texts to music. He has also produced recordings by Donna Peña, John Foley, S.J., Jaime Cortez, Liam Lawton, and the GIA Choral Subscription Service recordings. Gary received his Bachelor of Music from Southeastern Louisiana University and has worked as a campus minister at the Catholic University of America. From 1985-1991, he was Director of Music Ministry at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. Gary has given workshops and shaped ritual for national and regional conferences throughout the United States such as The East Coast Conference for Religious Education, the Hofinger Conference, the Gathering, and The National Association of Pastoral Musicians. Gustav Holst

Chelteham, Gloucestershire, England, September 21, 1874, d. London, England, May 25, 1934) was a renowned British composer and musician. Having studied at Cheltenham Grammar School, he soon obtained a professional position as an organist, and later as choirmaster. In 1892, Holst composed a two-act operetta, which so impressed his father that he borrowed the money to send Holst to the Royal College of Music. Severe neuritis in his right hand later caused him to give up the keyboard, and Holst turned to the trombone and composing. In 1895 Holst met Ralph Vaughan Williams, and the two became lifelong friends. Vaughan Williams helped Holst land his first job as a singing teacher. Holst became very interested in Indian and Hindu culture, and composed a number of operas translated from Sanksrit myths. These were not received well in England, however.
