Joseph Barnby
1838 - 1896 Person Name: Joseph Barnby, 1838-96 Arranger of "DUNSTAN" in Lutheran Service Book Joseph Barnby (b. York, England, 1838; d. London, England, 1896) An accomplished and popular choral director in England, Barby showed his musical genius early: he was an organist and choirmaster at the age of twelve. He became organist at St. Andrews, Wells Street, London, where he developed an outstanding choral program (at times nicknamed "the Sunday Opera"). Barnby introduced annual performances of J. S. Bach's St. John Passion in St. Anne's, Soho, and directed the first performance in an English church of the St. Matthew Passion. He was also active in regional music festivals, conducted the Royal Choral Society, and composed and edited music (mainly for Novello and Company). In 1892 he was knighted by Queen Victoria. His compositions include many anthems and service music for the Anglican liturgy, as well as 246 hymn tunes (published posthumously in 1897). He edited four hymnals, including The Hymnary (1872) and The Congregational Sunday School Hymnal (1891), and coedited The Cathedral Psalter (1873).

Genevieve Mary Irons
1855 - 1928 Person Name: Genevieve M. Irons Author of "Drawn to the Cross, which Thou hast Blest" in The Lutheran Hymnal Irons, Genevieve Mary, daughter of Dr. W. J. Irons, and granddaughter of J. Irons, was born at Brompton, Dec. 28, 1855. A few of her earliest pieces were contributed to the Sunday Magazine, 1876, and later. Her Manual for Holy Communion is entitled Corpus Christi, 1884. Her hymn, "Drawn to the Cross which Thou hast blessed" (Consecration of Self to Christ) was written in 1880, and printed the same year in the Sunday Magazine. It was afterwards included in her Corpus Christi, 1884. Alluding to this hymn (which was included in the Primitive Methodist Hymnal, 1881) Miss Irons has written "I always feel that hymn is part of me ... It contains expressions and allusions which to my mind are only capable of a Catholic meaning: but I am interested and gratified in knowing that the hymn speaks to the hearts of many who would probably differ from me on most points of doctrine." Died: April 6, 1924, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.
Drewett studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Charles Steggall, and served as organist at Harecourt Congregational Chapel, London; the German Lutheran Church, Dalston (1893-1905); and the German Embassy Church, Brompton (1905-14); and the Church of King Charles the Martyr, Tunbridge Wells (1907-24).

Blow Composer of "AGNUS DEI" in Northfield Hymnal No. 2 William Blow was born in 1819 in York, Yorkshire, England and christened in September 14, 1819 at St. Michael-le-Belfry, York. He was a descendant of John Blow. William served as Rector of Layer Breton, Essex, and was an amateur violinist and violin collector. He died on December 25, 1886 in Layer Breton, Essex, England.
