Psalm 68 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 68 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 68:9 First Line: We bless the Lord, the just, the good Lyrics: We bless the Lord, the just, the good, Who fills our hearts with joy and food: Who pours his blessings from the skies, And loads our days with rich supplies. He sends the sun his circuit round, To cheer the fruits, to warm the ground; He bids the clouds with plenteous rain Refresh the thirsty earth again. 'Tis to his care we owe our breath, And all our near escapes from death; Safety and health to God belong; He heals the weak, and guards the strong. He makes the saint and sinner prove The common blessings of his love; But the wide diff'rence that remains, Is endless joy, or endless pains. The Lord, that bruised the serpent's head, On all the serpent's seed shall tread; The stubborn sinner's hope confound, And smite him with a lasting wound. But his right hand his saints shall raise From the deep earth, or deeper seas, And bring them to his courts above; There shall they taste his special love. Topics: Judgment and mercy; Ascension of Christ; Christ His ascension; God great and good; God his power and majesty; God his vengeance and compassion; Jehovah; Mercies common and special; Power and majesty of God; Praise for temporal blessings; Spirit given at Christ's ascension; Vengeance and compassion

Ascension of Christ

Appears in 165 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 68 First Line: Lord, when thou didst ascend on high Lyrics: 1 Lord, when thou didst ascend on high Ten thousand angels fill'd the sky, Those heav'nly guards around thee wait Like chariots that attend thy state. 2 Not Sinai's mountain could appear, More glorious, when the Lord was there While he pronounc'd his dreadful law, And struck the chosen tribes with awe. 3 How bright the triumph none can tell, When the rebellious pow'rs of hell, That thousand souls had captives made, Were all in chains like captives led. 4 Rais'd by his father to the throne, He sent the promis'd Spirit down, With gifts and grace for rebel men, That God might dwell on earth again.

Let God, the God of battle, rise

Appears in 8 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 68 Lyrics: 1 Let God, the God of Battle, rise, And scatter His presumptuous Foes; Let shameful Rout their Host surprise, Who spitefully His Pow'r oppose. 2 As Smoke in Tempests Rage is lost, Or Wax into the Furnace cast; So let their sacrilegious Host Before His wrathful Presence waste. 3 But let the Servants of His Will His Favour's gentle Beams enjoy; Their upright Hearts let Gladness fill, And chearful Songs their Tongues employ. 4 To Him your Voice in Anthems raise: JEHOVAH's awful Name He bears: In Him rejoice; extol His Praise, Who rides upon high-rolling Spheres. 5 Him, from His Empire of the Skies, To this low World Compassion draws, The Orphan's Claim to patronize And judge the injur'd Widow's Cause. 6 'Tis God, who from a foreign Soil Restores poor Exiles to their Home; Makes Captives free; and fruitless Toil, Their proud Oppressors righteous Doom. 7 'Twas so of old, when Thou didst lead In Person, Lord, our Armies forth; Strange Terrors thro' the Desert spread, Convulsions shook th' astonish'd Earth. 8 The breaking Clouds did Rain distill, And Heav'n's high Arches shook with Fear; How then should Sinai's humble Hill Of Israel's God the Presence bear! 9 Thy Hand, at famish'd Earth's Complaint, Reliev'd her from celestial Stores; And, when thy Heritage was faint, Asswag'd the Drought with plenteous Show'rs. 10 Where Savages had rang'd before, At Ease Thou mad'st our Tribes reside; And in the Desert for the Poor, Thy generous Bounty did provide. Part II 11 Thou gav'st the word; we sallied forth, And in that pow'rful word o'ercame; whilst Virgin-troops, with Songs of Mirth, In State our conquest did proclaim. 12 Vast Armies, by such Gen'rals led, As yet had ne'er receiv'd a Foil, Forsook their Camp with sudden Dread, And to our Women left the Spoil. 13 Though Egypt's Drudges you have been, Your Army's Wings shall shine as bright, As Doves in golden Sunshine seen, Or silver'd o'er with paler Light. 14 'Twas so, when God's Almighty Hand O'er scatter'd Kings the Conquest won; Our Troops, drawn up on Jordan's Strand, High Salmon's glitt'ring snow outshone. 15 From thence to Jordan's farther Coast, And Bashan's Hill, we did advance: No more her Height shall Bashan boast, But that she's God's Inheritance. 16 But wherefore (tho' the Honour's great) Should this, O Mountain, swell your Pride? For Sion is His chosen Seat, Where He for ever will reside. 17 His Chariot's numberless; His Pow'rs Are heav'nly Hosts, that wait His Will: His Presence now fill Sion's Tow'rs, As once it honour'd Sinai's Hill. 18 Ascending high, in Triumph Thou Captivity hast captive led; And on thy People didst bestow The Spoil of Armies, once their Dread. Ev'n Rebels shall partake thy Grace, And humble Proselytes repair To worship at thy Dwelling-place, And all the World pay Homage there. 19 For Benefits each Day bestow'd, Be daily His great Name ador'd; 20 Who is our Saviour, and our God, Of Life and Death the Sov'reign Lord. 21 But Justice for His harden'd Foes Proportion'd Vengeance hath decreed, To wound the hoary Head of those Who in presumptuous Crimes proceed. 22 The Lord has thus in Thunder spoke: "As I subdu'd prous Bashan's King, "Once more I'll break my People's Yoke, "And from the Deep my Servants bring. 23 "Their Feet shall with a crimson Flood "Of slaughter'd Foes be cover'd o'er; "Nor Earth receive such impious Blood, "But leave for Dogs th' unhallow'd Gore." Part III 24 When, marching to thy blest Abode, The wond'rous Multitude survey'd The pompous State of Thee, our God, In Robes of Majesty array'd; 25 Sweet-singing Levites led the Van; Loud Instruments brought up the Rear; Between both Troops a Virgin-Train With Voice and Timbrel charm'd the Ear. 26 This was the Burden of their Song: "In full Assemblies bless the Lord; "All who to Israel's Tribes belong, "The God of Israel's Praise record." 27 Nor little Benjamin alone From neighb'ring Bounds did there attend. Nor only Judah's nearer Throne Her Counsellors in State did send; But Zebulon's remoter Seat, And Napthli's more distant Coast, (The grand Procession to complete) Sent up their Tribes, a princely Host. 28 Thus God to Strength and Union brought Our Tribes, at Strife till that blest Hour. This Work, which Thou, O God, hast wrought. Confirm with fresh Recruits of Pow'r. 29 To visit Salem, Lord, descend, And Sion thy terrestrial Throne; Where Kings with Presents shall attend, And Thee with offer'd Crowns atone. 30 Break down the Spearmens Ranks, who threat Like pamper'd Herds of savage Might: Their silver-armour'd Chiefs defeat, Who in destructive War delight. 31 Egypt shall then to God stretch forth Her Hands, and Africk Homage bring: 32 The scatter'd Kingdoms of the Earth Their common Sov'reign's Praises sing; 33 Who, mounted on the loftiest Sphere Of antient Heav'n, sublimely rides; From whence His dreadful Voice we hear, Like that of warring Winds and Tides. 34 Ascribe ye Pow'r to God most High: Of humble Israel He takes care; Whose Strength, from out the dusky Sky, Darts shining Terrors through the Air. 35 How dreadful are the sacred Courts, Where God has fix'd his earthly Throne! His Strength His feeble Saints supports: To God give Praise, to HIm alone.

Psalm 68: Let God arise, and scattered

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 15 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 68 First Line: Let God arise, and scattered Lyrics: 1Let God arise, and scattered let all his en’mies be; And let all those that do him hate before his presence flee. 2As smoke is driv’n, so drive thou them; as fire melts wax away, Before God’s face let wicked men so perish and decay. 3But let the righteous be glad: let them before God’s sight Be very joyful; yea, let them rejoice with all their might. 4To God sing, to his name sing praise; extol him with your voice, That rides on heav’n, by his name Jah, before his face rejoice. 5Because the Lord a father is unto the fatherless; God is the widow’s judge, within his place of holiness. 6God doth the solitary set in fam’lies: and from bands The chain’d doth free; but rebels do inhabit parched lands. 7O God, what time thou didst go forth before thy people’s face; And when through the great wilderness thy glorious marching was; 8Then at God’s presence shook the earth, then drops from heaven fell; This Sinai shook before the Lord, the God of Israel. 9O God, thou to thine heritage didst send a plenteous rain, Whereby thou, when it weary was, didst it refresh again. 10Thy congregation then did make their habitation there: Of thine own goodness for the poor, O God, thou didst prepare. 11The Lord himself did give the word, the word abroad did spread; Great was the company of them the same who published. 12Kings of great armies foiled were, and forc’d to flee away; And women, who remain’d at home, did distribute the prey. 13Though ye have lien among the pots, like doves ye shall appear, Whose wings with silver, and with gold whose feathers cover’d are. 14When there th’ Almighty scatter’d kings, like Salmon’s snow ‘twas white. 15God’s hill is like to Bashan hill, like Bashan hill for height. 16Why do ye leap, ye mountains high? this is the hill where God Desires to dwell; yea, God in it for aye will make abode. 17God’s chariots twenty thousand are, thousands of angels strong; In’s holy place God is, as in mount Sinai, them among. 18Thou hast, O Lord, most glorious, ascended up on high; And in triumph victorious led captive captivity: Thou hast received gifts for men, for such as did rebel; Yea, ev’n for them, that God the Lord in midst of them might dwell. 19Bless’d be the Lord, who is to us of our salvation God; Who daily with his benefits us plenteously doth load. 20He of salvation is the God, who is our God most strong; And unto God the Lord from death the issues do belong. 21But surely God shall wound the head of those that are his foes; The hairy scalp of him that still on in his trespass goes. 22God said, My people I will bring again from Bashan hill; Yea, from the sea’s devouring depths them bring again I will; 23That in the blood of enemies thy foot imbru’d may be, And of thy dogs dipp’d in the same the tongues thou mayest see. 24Thy goings they have seen, O God; the steps of majesty Of my God, and my mighty King, within the sanctuary. 25Before went singers, players next on instruments took way; And them among the damsels were that did on timbrels play. 26Within the congregations bless God with one accord: From Isr’el’s fountain do ye bless and praise the mighty Lord. 27With their prince, little Benjamin, princes and council there Of Judah were, there Zabulon’s and Napht’li’s princes were. 28Thy God commands thy strength; make strong what thou wrought’st for us, Lord. 29For thy house at Jerusalem kings shall thee gifts afford. 30The spearmen’s host, the multitude of bulls, which fiercely look, Those calves which people have forth sent, O Lord our God, rebuke, Till ev’ry one submit himself, and silver pieces bring: The people that delight in war disperse, O God and King. 31Those that be princes great shall then come out of Egypt lands; And Ethiopia to God shall soon stretch out her hands. 32O all ye kingdoms of the earth, sing praises to this King; For he is Lord that ruleth all, unto him praises sing. 33To him that rides on heav’ns of heav’ns, which he of old did found; Lo, he sends out his voice, a voice in might that doth abound. 34Strength unto God do ye ascribe; for his excellency Is over Israel, his strength is in the clouds most high. 35Thou’rt from thy temple dreadful, Lord; Isr’el’s own God is he, Who gives his people strength and pow’r: O let God blessed be.
