Otis L. McCoy

1897 - 1995 Arranger of "[I was alone and idle]" in Church Hymnal McCoy, Otis Leon. (Ninety-Six, South Carolina, February 17, 1897--?). Church of God. Minister, music editor, and songwriter. Graduate of James D. Vaughan Conservatory. Organized the music department of the Church of God Publishing House as Tennessee Music and Printing Company in 1931. Served as music editor for a total of 23 years. Retired in 1961 and continued to be quite active as a tenor soloist. Best known songs: "Naturalized for Heaven" and "Send Me." --Charles L. Person Name: Unknwon Author of "I'm On the Battlefield" in Songs of Inspiration In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Albert E. Brumley

1905 - 1977 Arranger of "[I was alone and idle, I was a sinner too]" in Radio Favorites Born: October 29, 1905, near Spiro, Oklahoma. Died: November 15, 1977, Springfield, Missouri. Buried: Fox Cemetery, Powell, Missouri. Brumley attended the Hartford Musical Institute in Hartford, Arkansas, and sang with the Hartford Quartet. He went on to teach at singing schools in the Ozarks, and lived most of his life in Powell, Missouri. He worked for 34 years a staff writer for the Hartford and Stamps/Baxter publishing companies, then founded the Albert E. Brumley & Sons Music Company and Country Gentlemen Music, and bought the Hartford Music Company. John T. Benson

1861 - 1930 Person Name: John T. Benson, Jr. Arranger of "[I was alone and idle, I was a sinner too]" in Songs of Inspiration Mr. John T. Benson, Sr. was born on February 19, 1861 in the Edgefield community in east Nashville and was brought up in the Tulip Street Methodist Church where his father was a charter member. John T. and his wife were involved in the founding of an independent holiness church that later became the Church of the Nazarene. Mr. Benson served as minister of music, first in the mission and then in the Church. The Bensons wrote some gospel songs, but their greatest contribution was in the publishing and distribution of song books and hymnals. He founded the John T Benson Publishing Company in Nashville. Thomas Andrew Dorsey

1899 - 1993 Person Name: Thomas A. Dorsey Arranger of "[I was alone and idle]" in The New National Baptist Hymnal (21st Century Edition) Thomas Andrew Dorsey was born in Villa Rica, a small rural town near Atlanta, Georgia. In 1919 he moved to Chicago. Most of his musical training was in the church, but he also studied and played jazz and blues. He later combined jazz and blues with religious texts, giving birth to gospel music. In 1931, along with Magnolia Lewis-Butts and Theodore Roosevelt Frye, he established the first gospel choir at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Chicago. He went on to lead the gospel choir at Pilgrim Baptist Church, which he led for 60 years. Dorsey was also instrumental in founding the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses (NCGCC) in 1933. The convention taught choirs all over the country how to sing gospel music. 1904 - 1964 Arranger of "[I once was lone and idle, I was a sinner too]" in Fossett's Inspirational Melodies Died: December 20, 1964. Buried: Laurel Land Memorial Park, Dallas, Texas. A native of DeKalb County, Alabama, Fossett attended his first Gospel Music School at age 12. At age 16, he attended Thomas Mosley’s Normal School. By age 19, he began singing and playing in a quartet. By 1937, he was teaching in High Point, North Carolina, where he married Katherine Strother. Three years later, he joined the Chattanooga, Tennessee, office of the Stamps-Baxter music publishers.
