When Jesus Came Preaching the Kingdom of God

Author: Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Hymnal: Worship (4th ed.) #723 (2011) Meter: Irregular Lyrics: 1 When Jesus came preaching the Kingdom of God With the love that has pow'r to persuade, The sick were made whole, both in body and soul, And even the demons obeyed. But he needed a few he could trust to be true, To share in his work from the start: When Jesus came preaching the Kingdom of God, God's gift to the humble of heart. 2 Since Jesus came preaching the Kingdom of God, What a change in our lives he has made! How many have shared in the joy of their Lord, In self-giving have loved and obeyed! But let none of us doubt what religion's about, Or by what it is shamed and betrayed: Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with God, Is the rule of life Jesus obeyed. 3 Still Jesus comes preaching the Kingdom of God In a world that is sick and afraid; His gospel has spread like the leaven in bread By the love that has a pow'r to persuade. So let none of us swerve from our mission to serve, That has made us his Church from the start: May Jesus, the Light of the World, send us out In the strength of the humble of heart. Topics: Kingdom / Reign of God; Ordinary Time, Seventh Sunday B Languages: English Tune Title: SAMANTHRA
