J. Albert Jeffery

1855 - 1929 Composer of "ANCIENT OF DAYS" in Christian Youth Hymnal Born: October 26, 1855, Plymouth, England. Died: June 4, 1929, Brookline, Massachusetts. Jeffery (sometimes misspelled as Jeffrey) began playing the organ at St. Anne’s Cathedral in Plymouth at age 14, taking over his father’s position. He emigrated to America in 1876 and settled in Albany, New York. He developed a chorus and directed the music at St. Agnes School, and played the organ at the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral. He left for Yonkers, New York, in 1893, and served at the First Presbyterian Church. Later, he taught music at the New England Conservatory. --www.hymntime.com/tch

Helen Thoburn

1885 - 1932 Author of "Father of Lights, in Whom There is No Shadow" in Christian Youth Hymnal Thoburn, Helen. (Union City, Pennsylvania, June 17, 1885--February 3, 1932, New York City). One of a long line of Methodists engaged in religious work. After her graduation from Leland Stanford University she was appointed a secretary of the Y.W.C.A. to do editorial work in China where she spent eight years. Upon relinquishing this work she returned to the United States and undertook special responsibility for the international educational program of the Association. She died suddenly in New York City where she made her home upon her return from China. --Robert G. McCutchan, DNAH Archives

Elizabeth Wilson

b. 1867 Author of "Father of Lights, in Whom There is No Shadow" in Christian Youth Hymnal Wilson, Elizabeth, L.L.D. (Neenah, Wisconsin, August 17, 1867--?). Daughter of a Methodist Episcopal minister, herself an ordained minister of the same denomination, a member (one-time officer) of the American Association of Women Preachers, and of the British Society for the Ministry of Women. She was educated at Lawrence University (now College), Appleton, Wisconsin; Oxford, England; Jena, Germany, and the Bengal Government Weaving Institute, Serampore, Inda. After teaching at Lawrence for five years, 1885-1889, she began her real life work with the Y.W.C.A. and continued in it for thirty-nine years, a part of the time being spent as as Association Secretary in Japan. Retiring from active work she lived for a time at Appleton and then removed to California where, in 1953 at the time of this writing, she makes her home in Los Angeles at Pacific Homes, a residence for retired religious workers.
