God the Lord, the king almighty

Author: Christopher Martin Idle (b. 1938) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 Lyrics: 1 God the Lord, the King almighty, calls the earth from east to west: shining out from Zion's splendour, city loveliest and best, comes our God! He breaks the silence, robed in burning majesty: 'Gather all my covenant people, bound by sacrifice to me. 2 'Hear me testify against you: listen, Israel, as I speak. I do not require your offerings, sacrifice I do not seek. Mountain birds and meadow creatures, Cattle on a thousand hills, all the beasts are my possession, moving as their maker wills.' 3 God who owns the whole creation needs no gift, no food, no house; bring to him your hearts' thanksgiving- God most high will hear your vows. Trust him in the day of trouble, call to him who will redeem; God will be your strong deliverer, his renown your daily theme. 4 Lies increase and evil prospers; God is silent while men say, 'He has gone-let us forget him', thinking he is false as they. But his word will judge or save us: let us come before his throne, giving thanks, receiving mercy- God's salvation now made known. Topics: Christian Year Advent; Creation; Salvation and Redemption; Word of God Used With Tune: HYFRYDOL

Give thanks, my soul, for harvest

Author: William Watkins Reid, 1890- Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 9 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50:10-11 Lyrics: 1 Give thanks, my soul, for harvest, for store of fruit and grain, but know the owner gives us that we may share again; where souls are lone and hungry, where needy children cry, with gifts from God’s rich bounty may thankfulness reply. 2 Give thanks, my soul, for riches of woodland, mine and hill, but know that gold and timber are the Creator's still, and God's on loan to stewards to fashion and to share, providing all earth's children the blessing of God's care. 3 Give thanks, my soul, for labours that strength and days employ, but know your Maker's purpose brings toil as well as joy. Where leads the path to error, where justice lies in chain, where hoarders cause new hunger, there must we strive again. 4 Give thanks, my soul, for beauty, for vision, hope and skill, for Christ, divine revealer of God's redeeming will.
