In the bleak midwinter

Author: Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894) Meter: Irregular Appears in 86 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 8:27 Lyrics: 1 In the bleak midwinter frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone: snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. 2 Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign: in the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. 3 Enough for him whom cherubim worship night and day, a breastful of milk and a mangerful of hay: enough for him whom angels fall down before, the ox and ass and camel which adore. 4 Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air, but only his mother, in her maiden bliss, worshiped the Beloved with a kiss. 5 What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb, if I were a wise man I would do my part, yet what I can I give him, give my heart. God the invisible appears, God the blest, the great I AM, sojourns in this vale of tears, and Jesus is his name. 2 Him the angels all adored, their maker and their king: tidings of their humbled Lord they now to mortals bring: emptied of his majesty, of his dazzling glories shorn, being’s source begins to be, and God himself is born! 3 See the eternal Son of God a mortal son of man, dwelling in an earthly clod whom heaven cannot contain! Stand amazed ye heavens at this! See the Lord of earth and skies humbled to the dust he is, and in a manger lies! 4 We earth's children now rejoice, the Prince of peace proclaim, with heaven’s host lift up our voice, and shout Emmanuel’s name; knees and hearts to him we bow; of our flesh, and of our bone, Jesus is our brother now, and God is all our own! All Things Are Thine

Author: John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 92 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 8:22-30 First Line: All things are thine; no gift have we Lyrics: 1 All things are thine; no gift have we, Lord of all gifts, to offer thee; and so with grateful hearts today thine own before thy feet we lay. Thy will was informed builders' thought; thy hand unseen amidst us wrought; through mortal motive, scheme, and plan, thy wise eternal purpose ran. 2 No lack thy perfect fullness knew; for human needs and longings grew this house of prayer, this home of rest, where grace is shared and truth addressed. In weakness and in want, we call on thee for whom the heavens are small; thy glory is thy children's good, thy joy fulfilled in servanthood. 3 All things are thine; no gift have we, Lord of all gifts, to offer thee; and so with grateful hearts today thine own before thy feet we lay. Come now and deign these walls to bless; fill with thy love their emptiness; and let their door a gateway be to lead us from ourselves to thee. But oh! to shew thy smiling face, To bring thy glories near— Amazing and transporting grace To dwell with mortals here! V. How strange! how awful is thy love! They Did Not Build in Vain

Author: Alan Luff (1928-) Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 8:22-30 Lyrics: 1 They did not build in vain who founded here a church as witness to God's love amid a world of pain, for still, to those who wish to see, this place proclaims God's mystery. 2 They built upon the rock that is the risen Lord, the one foundation laid which stands each earthly shock; that, Spirit filled, we here might raise, as living temples, prayer and praise. 3 Those who have loved this place, a cloud of witnesses, surround and urge us on as we now run our race, and so we lay aside each sin in our desire to strive and win. 4 Though the horizon's bend conceals the way ahead, the footprints on the road show Christ waits at the end; in him alone our faith shall stand who waits for us at God's right hand. 5 In every place our world is storm and tempest tossed; the flames of fear and hate are evil's flags unfurled; yet still the Spirit's wind and fire pour gifts for service in this hour. 6 Here is our meeting place, where doubt finds grounds of faith; where hurt finds healing love, our penitence your grace; where bridging time to eternity is God the holy Trinity. A church erected to endure, the temple of our God. We come to worship in this place with aspiration high; it is the consecrated place, where God himself draws nigh. 2 The church is God’s abiding place, his altar is within, and here by faith we see God’s face, are cleansed from stain of sin. A sanctuary for the soul, where love can cast our fear, where broken spirits are made whole, for God himself is here. 3 Around Christ’s table we commune in fellowship supreme; inspired by Christ, through word and tune, of things divine we dream.
