Wandering Choruses

You are here

In 19th century camp meetings and revivals, I've read about song collections containing “wandering choruses.” As I understand the term, they were stand-alone choruses that could be attached to any song. I would like to see one or two, just out of curiosity, and also see how one might be paired with an existing song. However, I don't know where to look, or even if it's possible to find without delving into archival collections.

A couple examples would be “The Chorus” https://hymnary.org/hymnal/C41858 and “The Revivalist” https://hymnary.org/hymnal/RC101880https://hymnary.org/hymnal/RC101880 which have appended choruses to hymns. Other examples would be “At the cross, at the cross” and “We'll walk in the light, beautiful light.” You could probably find more examples by searching “Choruses” under the hymnal title in “Advanced Search” or searching the chorus first line in the Text Name field.
