Searching for background info on an unusual hymnal

You are here

I was given an old hymnal (revival songbook?) recently that is missing some of the front and back.  Mine begins with Hymn No. 9: How it Saves.  Across the top of this hymn in bold print & all caps is written *RODEHEAVER'S.  And there is a biography of Homer Rodeheaver below the hymn.  No. 15 is *ALEXANDER'S There Shall Be Showers of Blessing.  Again, a bio appears below the hymn.  Bios also appear for Charlie Tillman, William Doane, E. O. Excell, J. Lincoln Hall of Hall-Mack Company, H. L. Gilmour, John T. Benson, Homer Cummings, and Robert Lowry below a respective hymn for each composer.

Next is a section titled CHILDREN'S SONGS, then a section of INVITATION AND ALTAR SONGS, and then a section titled DEVOTIONAL HYMNS.

No. 243 is titled SELECTED READINGS which includes Offertory Sentences, The Lord's Prayer, The Great Commandment, The New Commandment, The Last Commission and The Ten Commandments.  No. 244 begins a section of SELECTED PSALMS.  Still under the heading of Selected Psalms is Proverbs 3, Matthew 5, The Apostles' Creed, and 1 Corinthians 13.

No. 276 is a hymn and below the hymn is a SUPPLEMENT INDEX for Hymns (plus the readings) No. 222-276.  The section titled SONGS OF SALVATION AND SERVICE begins on No. 280.  All of these were either tunes composed by M. Homer Cummings or lyrics written by him or both.  At the bottom of No. 310 (one of Cummings' tunes) is the INDEX TO SUPPLEMENT NO. 2,  The INDEX TO SUPPLEMENT NO. 3 covers hymns by Cummings and other composers.  There are other hymns after this and probably another index, but I am missing some of the back.

With the various indexes and sections, this songbook seems like a compilation of other songbooks.  Because of the prominence given to M. Homer Cummings' songs, I suspect he published this book.  The latest copyright I spotted on individual songs was 1931.  Has anyone seen a hymnal like this or maybe this very one?  I would love to know more about it.

Well, the database shows eleven books edited, compiled, and/or published by M. Homer Cummings, but unfortunately the only one that is fully indexed (as opposed to the alphabetically ordered DNAH system) is the 1920 Songs of Salvation and Service, Revised. 1920 is too early to be the right edition even if it were the right title, and #9 doesn't match. (You may have already done this research; if so, I just duplicated your effort! ;-) ) So, I'm afraid, until someone who has access to the six post-1931 items:

Sacred Selections    M. Homer Cummings (Editor and  Publisher)    1932
Special Songs    M. Homer Cummings (Editor and  Publisher)    1935
Spiritual Songs    M. Homer Cummings (Editor and  Publisher)    1936
Spiritual Songs    M. Homer Cummings (Editor and  Publisher)    1938
Let Everybody Sing    M. Homer Cummings (Editor)    1949
Revival Refrains    M. Homer Cummings (Editor and  Publisher)    1953
Sing Hosannas (a revised and enlarged ed. of Let Everybody Sing)    M. Homer Cummings (Editor and  Publisher)    1955

either indexes them or checks your clues, it's unlikely we'll know.
