Hymn 37 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #I.37.1 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Mark 15:20 First Line: The mighty frame of glorious grace Lyrics: The mighty frame of glorious grace, That brightest monument of praise That e'er the God of love designed, Employs and fills my lab'ring mind. Begin, my soul, the heav'nly song, A burden for an angel's tongue: When Gabriel sounds these awful things, He tunes and summons all his stungs. Proclaim inimitable love: Jesus, the Lord of worlds above, Puts off the beams of bright array, And veils the God in mortal clay! What black reproach defiled his name, When with our sins he took our shame! He whom adoring angels blessed Is made the impious rebel's jest. He that distributes crowns and thrones Hangs on a tree, and bleeds, and groans! The Prince of Life resigns his breath, The King of Glory bows to death! But see the wonders of his power, He triumphs in his dying hour; And while by Satan's rage he fell, He dashed the rising hopes of hell. Thus were the hosts of death subdued, And sin was drowned in Jesus' blood; Thus he arose, and reigns above, And conquers sinners by his love. Who shall fulfil this boundless song? The theme surmounts an angel's tongue: How low, how vain are mortal airs, When Gabriel's nobler harp despairs! Languages: English

Sing, my tongue, the Saviour’s glory

Author: Thomas Aquinas, c. 1227-74; Edward Caswall, 1814-78 Hymnal: Together in Song #501 (1999) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Scripture: Mark 14:22-31 Lyrics: 1 Sing, my tongue, the Saviour’s glory, of his flesh the mystery sing: of the blood all price exceeding shed by our eternal King, destined for the world's redemption from a Virgin's womb to spring. 2 Born for us, and for us given, born to live like us below, he, a man with us abiding, lived the gospel seed to sow; and at last faced death undaunted, his self-giving love to show. 3 On the night of that last supper, seated with his chosen band, first the passover observing he fulfils the law's command, then as food to his disciples gives himself with his own hand. 4 Word made flesh! His word life-giving gives his flesh our food to be, wine as his own blood he offers; then, though senses fail to see, faith alone the true heart wakens to behold the mystery. 5 Therefore we, before him kneeling, this great sacrament revere; ancient forms all have their ending for the newer rite is here; faith its aid to sight is lending: though unseen, the Lord is here. 6 Glory let us give and blessing, to the Father and the Son, honour, might and praise addressing while eternal ages run, and the Spirit's love confessing, who from both with both is one. Topics: Maundy Thursday; Saints Days and Holy Days Apostles Languages: English Tune Title: HOLYWOOD
