Henry Hiles

1826 - 1904 Composer of "ST. LEONARD (Hiles)" in The Cyber Hymnal Born: December 31, 1826, Shrewsbury, England. Died: October 20, 1904, Worthing, England. Hiles was educated at Oxford (BMus 1862, DMus 1867). He played the organ at Shrewsbury, as his brother’s deputy (1846); Bishopwearmouth (1847); St. Michael’s, Wood Street (1859); the Blind Asylum, Manchester (1859); Bowden (1861); and St. Paul’s, Manchester (1863-67). He lectured in harmony and composition at Owen’s College in Manchester (1867) and Victoria University (1879), and was Professor at the Manchester College of Music (1893). He also conducted musical societies in Lancashire and Yorkshire, and owned and edited the Quarterly Music Review (1885-88). He retired in 1904, moving to Pinner, near Harrow. 1866 - 1944 Person Name: Henry H. Barstow Author of "The Son of Man Goes Forth Today" in The Cyber Hymnal Barstow, Henry Hayden. (Rochester, NY, December 31, 1866--November 19, 1944). Presbyterian minister. the son of Homer A. and Isabelle Adgate Barstow, he was educated at Rochester University, A.B. 1893, and Auburn Theological Seminary, B.D. 1898. Rochester later honored him with a D.D. He served in pastorates at Caledonia, NY (1900-1907), Westminster Church, Rochester, NY (1913-1920), Calvary Church, Auburn, NY (1920-1934), Union Springs, NY (1934-1939), and the Federated Church, McLean, Tompkins County, NY (1939-1942). He married Submit Jameson Smith on December 12, 1899. For a time he edited Auburn Seminary's Chapel Bell. From 1907 to 1913, he edited publications of the New York Anti-Saloon League.
