Now the day is over

Author: Sabine Baring-Gould, 1834 - 1924 Appears in 973 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Now the day is over, Night is drawing nigh, Shadows of the evening Steal across the sky. 2 Now the darkness gathers, Stars begin to peep, Birds and beasts and flowers Soon will be asleep. 3 Jesus, give the weary Calm and sweet repose; With thy tenderest blessing May mine eyelids close. A-men. 4 Grant to little children Visions bright of thee; Guard the sailors tossing On the deep blue sea. 5 Comfort every sufferer Watching late in pain; Those who plan some evil From their sins restrain. 6 Through the long night-watches May thine angels spread Their white wings above me, Watching round my bed. 7 When the morning wakens, Then may I arise Pure and fresh and sinless In thy holy eyes. 8 Glory to the Father, Glory to the Son, And to thee, blest Spirit, Whilst all ages run. Amen. Topics: Church Life and Work Travellers; The Church Worship - Evening Used With Tune: ST. LUCIAN

Taking Holy Orders in 1864, he held the curacy of Horbury, near Wakefield, until 1867, when he was preferred to the incumbency of Dalton, Yorks. In 1871 he became rector of East Mersea, Essex, and in 1881 rector of Lew Trenchard, Devon. In the Sacristy for Nov. 1871, he also contributed nine carols to an article on "The Noels and Carols of French Flanders.” These have been partially transferred to Chope's and Staniforth's Carol Books, and also to his Church Songs. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907) ================== Baring-Gould, S., p. 114, i.
