George Lockwood

b. 1946 Person Name: George Lockwood, 1946- Scripture: James 3:17-18 Translator (sts. 2-4) of "When We Are Living (Pues si vivimos)" in Community of Christ Sings Rev. George Lockwood was born in 1946 and has been a missionary to Costa Rica. He has pastored Spanish-speaking congregations in both Arizona and California and served on the editorial committee for the Methodist hymnal supplement Celebremos II. In addition, Lockwood has traveled throughout Central and South America interviewing church musicians and gathering new hymns from both Spanish and Portuguese cultures which he then presents at conferences and workshops. H. Kenn Carmichael

1908 - 1996 Scripture: James 3:17-18 Author of "Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples" in Glory to God H. Kenn Carmichael was born in Martins Ferry, 1908 and graduated from Muskingum College (B.A. 1938), the University of Wisconsin (M.A. in Speech, 1930), and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D. in Theater, 1941). He was head of the theatre department at Purdue University (1931-1943). From 1943 to 1946, Carmichael served in the U.S. Navy, where he made training films. After his enlistment ended, Carmichael taught at City College, Los Angeles (1947-1954), and then joined Film Production International producing films for denominational stewardship campaigns. In 1962, Carmichael and his wife were commissioned by the Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations (COEMAR) of the United Presbyterian Church U.S.A. as consultants in communications to the Middle East and Africa. After ten years they returned to the United States, where Kenn became associate pastor at Central Church (1972-1979). Since 1979 the Carmichaels have lived at Westminster Gardens, Los Angeles. Carmichael was Moderator of the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii in 1987. He was also honored as a distinguished alumnus by Muskingum College. --The Presbyterian Hymnal Companion, 1993

Marie J. Post

1919 - 1990 Scripture: James 3:1-12 Author of "Lord, Speak for Me, for I Am Yours (Psalm 26)" in Glory to God Marie (Tuinstra) Post (b. Jenison, MI, 1919; d. Grand Rapids, MI, 1990) While attending Dutch church services as a child, Post was first introduced to the Genevan psalms, which influenced her later writings. She attended Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she studied with Henry Zylstra. From 1940 to 1942 she taught at the Muskegon Christian Junior High School. For over thirty years Post wrote poetry for the Grand Rapids Press and various church periodicals. She gave many readings of her poetry in churches and schools and has been published in a number of journals and poetry anthologies. Two important collections of her poems are I Never Visited an Artist Before (1977) and the posthumous Sandals, Sails, and Saints (1993). A member of the 1987 Psalter Hymnal Revision Committee, Post was a significant contribu­tor to its array of original texts and paraphrases. Bert Polman

Leo Sowerby

1895 - 1968 Scripture: James 3:1-12 Composer of "PERRY" in Glory to God Leo Sowerby (1895-1968) was born in Grand Rapids and studied at the American Conservatory of Music, Chicago (M.A. 1918). He served as regimental bandmaster with the 332nd Field Artillery Band in both England and France (1917-1919). He became the first fellow of the American Academy in Rome, where he studied for three years. He participated in the Salzburg Festival for Contemporary Music in 1923. From 1924 to 1963 he was on the faculty of the American Conservatory. He also was organist and choirmaster of St. James Church (1927-1963). Sowerby had an interest in folk music which he turned into wonderful compositions. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his Canticle of the Sun (1946). He died at Port Clinton, Ohio. --Presbyterian Hymnal Companion

Kathleen Rae Moore

b. 1951 Person Name: Kathleen R. Moore Scripture: James 3:18 Author of "We Wait the Peaceful Kingdom" in Glory to God Kathleen Rae Moore was born in 1951 in Massachusetts and has lived most of her life in Iowa. She is the daughter of a pastor and a college English teacher, from both of whom she received her love of words. She is a United Methodist pastor in the Iowa Annual Conference, ordained elder in 1991. She attended Simpson College and Iowa State University, and graduated from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL in 1988. She studied ecological sciences at Simpson and Iowa State, preparing to teach in outdoor education. She also ran for the state legislature and was involved in politics, until beginning to work for the church in 1979, which led to her listening more closely to God's call to ordained ministry. Kathy wrote her first hymn in 1986 while in seminary and determined to write a hymn for Advent or Christmas each year. This led to a flowering of around 100 hymns in all. She looks forward to finding time in retirement when she hopes to focus on writing. She has always loved preaching, and enjoys being able to put theological messages into the poetry of hymnody.
