The God of Abraham praise

Author: Thomas Olivers, 1724-1799 Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 453 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 2:2-4 Lyrics: 1 The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above, ancient of everlasting days, and God of love. Almighty, great I Am! by earth and heaven confessed, I bow and bless the sacred name forever blest. 2 The God of Abraham praise, at whose supreme command from earth I rise and seek the joys at God's right hand. I all on earth forsake, its wisdom, fame and power, and Lord my only portion make, my shield and tower. 3 Though nature’s strength decay, and earth and hell withstand, to Canaan’s bounds I urge my way at God's command; the watery deep I pass with Jesus in my view; and through the howling wilderness my way pursue. 4 The goodly land I see, with peace and plenty blest, a land of sacred liberty and endless rest; there milk and honey flow, and oil and wine abound, and trees of life forever grow, with mercy crowned. 5 There dwells the Lord our King, the Lord our Righteousness; triumphant o’er the world and sin, the Prince of Peace On Zion’s sacred height God's kingdom still maintains, and glorious with the saints in light forever reigns. 6 The whole triumphant host give thanks to God on high; "hail, Father, Son and Holy Ghost" they ever cry. Hail, Abraham’s God, and mine! I join the heavenly lays; all might and majesty are thine, and endless praise. Topics: Canticles and Scripture Paraphrases; Desert / Wilderness; Freedom / Liberation; God Name of; God Image of (in humans); God Creator and Ruler; Jesus Christ Prince of Peace; Land; Praise; Trinity; Zion Used With Tune: LEONI Text Sources: Hebrew, Yigdal

The Church’s One Foundation

Author: Samuel John Stone Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 856 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 2:4 First Line: The church's one foundation Lyrics: 1 The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord. She is his new creation by water and the word. From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride. With his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. 2 Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. 3 Though with a scornful wonder this world sees her oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up: "How long?" And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 4 Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore: till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. 5 Yet she on earth has union with God, the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, may live eternally. Topics: Atonement; The Church; Eternal Life; Hope; Reconciliation; Salvation; Unity Used With Tune: AURELIA

The King of love my shepherd is

Author: H. W. Baker, 1821-1877 Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 675 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 2:16 Lyrics: 1 The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his and he is mine for ever. 2 Where streams of living water flow my ransomed soul he leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow with food celestial feedeth. 3 Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home rejoicing brought me. 4 In death's dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. 5 Thou spread'st a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and O what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! 6 And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never: good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house for ever. The glorious Reign of CHRIST

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 2:2-5 First Line: In latter days JEHOVAH's mount Lyrics: 1 In latter days JEHOVAH's mount, His sacred house shall rise Above the mountains and the hills, and strike the wond'ring eyes. To this the joyful nations round, all tribes and tongues shall flow: 3 'Up to JEHOVAH's mount, they'll say 'to Jacob's God we'll go. 'To us He'll point his ways of truth: 'his sacred path's we'll tread: 'From Salem and from Zion shall 'Jehovah's law proceed.' 4 Among the nations and the isles as Judge supreme He'll sit; And vested with unbounded pow'r, will punish or acquit. No strife shall rage, no angry feuds disturb those peaceful years: To plowshares then they'll beat their swords, to pruning hooks their spears. No nation against nation rise, and slaughter'd hosts deplore: They'll lay the martial trumpet by, and study war no more. 5 O come ye then, of Jacob's house, our hearts now let us join; And walking in JEHOVAH'S light, with holy beauties shine.
