Scripture reference

A Scripture reference is a reference to a particular passage in the Bible. It consists of a book, starting chapter, starting verse, ending chapter, and ending verse. Scripture references can be entered in a variety of formats (e.g., "Gen. 1:1", "Ecclesiastes 9:5", "Psalms", and "Matt. 17" are all acceptable). When indexing a hymnal, use the Scripture Spreadsheet to enter Scripture references.

There are many versions of the Bible in existence, and not all of them have the same numbering. Editors should be aware of this, especially if citing scripture information from non-mainline-protestant type hymnals (e.g. catholic hymnals).
