Glorious things of thee are spoken

Author: John Newton, 1725-1807 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,292 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 114:8 Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode. On the Rock of ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou may'st smile at all thy foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage: grace which, like the Lord the giver, never fails from age to age? *3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading, light by night and shade by day; daily on the manna feeding which he gives them when they pray. 4 Saviour, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name. Fading is the worldling's pleasure, all his boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasure, none but Zion's children know. Author: John of Damascus (675?-749?); John Mason Neale (1818-1866) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 380 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 114 Lyrics: 1 Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness; God hath brought his Israel into joy from sadness: loosed from Pharaoh's bitter yoke Jacob's sons and daughters; led them with unmoistened foot through the Red Sea waters. 2 'Tis the spring of souls today: Christ hath burst his prison, and from three days' sleep in death as a sun hath risen. All the winter of our sins, long and dark, is flying from his light, to whom we give laud and praise undying. 3 Now the queen of seasons, bright with the day of splendour, with the royal feast of feasts, comes its joy to render; comes to glad Jerusalem, who with true affection welcomes in unwearied strains Jesus' resurrection. 4 Neither might the gates of death, nor the tomb's dark portal, nor the watchers, nor the seal hold thee as a mortal; but today amidst the twelve thou didst stand, bestowing that thy peace which evermore passeth human knowing. 5 Alleluia now we cry to our King immortal, who triumphant burst the bars of the tomb's dark portal; alleluia, with the Son God the Father praising; alleluia, yet again to the Spirit raising.
