O Worship the King

Author: Robert Grant Meter: 10.10.11.11 Appears in 1,142 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 104 First Line: O worship the King all glorious above Lyrics: 1 O worship the King all-glorious above, O gratefully sing his power and his love: our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise. 2 O tell of his might and sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm. 3 Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain. 4 Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in you do we trust, nor find you to fail. Your mercies, how tender, how firm to the end, our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend! 5 O measureless Might, unchangeable Love, whom angels delight to worship above! Your ransomed creation, with glory ablaze, in true adoration shall sing to your praise! Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

Author: Walter Chalmers Smith Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 211 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 104:2 Lyrics: 1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise. 2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above, thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. 3 To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish, but nought changest thee. 4 Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render, O help us to see 'tis only the splendor of light hideth thee. Psalm 104

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 82 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 104 First Line: My soul, thy great Creator praise: Lyrics: My soul, thy great Creator praise: When clothed in his celestial rays, He in full majesty appears, And, like a robe, his glory wears. The heav'ns are for his curtains spread, The unfathomed deep he makes his bed. Clouds are his chariot when he flies On winged storms across the skies. Angels, whom his own breath inspires, His ministers, are flaming fires; And swift as thought their armies move To bear his vengeance or his love. The world's foundations by his hand Are poised, and shall for ever stand; He binds the ocean in his chain, Lest it should drown the earth again. When earth was covered with the flood, Which high above the mountains stood, He thundered, and the ocean fled, Confined to its appointed bed. The swelling billows know their bound, And in their channels walk their round; Yet thence conveyed by secret veins, They spring on hills and drench the plains. He bids the crystal fountains flow, And cheer the valleys as they go; Tame heifers there their thirst allay, And for the stream wild asses bray. From pleasant trees which shade the brink, The lark and linnet light to drink Their songs the lark and linnet raise, And chide our silence in his praise. God from his cloudy cistern pours On the parched earth enriching showers; The grove, the garden, and the field, A thousand joyful blessings yield. He makes the grassy food arise, And gives the cattle large supplies With herbs for man of various power, To nourish nature or to dire. What noble fruit the vines produce! The olive yields a shining juice; Our hearts are cheered with gen'rous wine, With inward joy our faces shine. O bless his name, ye Britons, fed With nature's chief supporter, bread; While bread your vital strength imparts, Serve him with vigor in your hearts. Behold, the stately cedar stands, Raised in the forest by his hands; Birds to the boughs for shelter fly, And build their nests secure on high. To craggy hills ascends the goat, And at the airy mountain's foot The feebler creatures make their cell; He gives them wisdom where to dwell. He sets the sun his circling race, Appoints the moon to change her face; And when thick darkness veils the day, Calls out wild beasts to hunt their prey. Fierce lions lead their young abroad, And, roaring, ask their meat from God; But when the morning beams arise, The savage beast to covert flies. Then man to daily labor goes; The night was made for his repose; Sleep is thy gift, that sweet relief From tiresome toil and wasting grief. How strange thy works! how great thy skill! And every land thy riches fill: Thy wisdom round the world we see; This spacious earth is full of thee. Nor less thy glories in the deep, Where fish in millions swim and creep With wondrous motions, swift or slow, Still wand'ring in the paths below. There ships divide their wat'ry way, And flocks of scaly monsters play; There dwells the huge leviathan, And foams and sports in spite of man. Vast are thy works, Almighty Lord; All nature rests upon thy word, And the whole race of creatures stands Waiting their portion from thy hands. While each receives his diff'rent food, Their cheerful looks pronounce it good: Eagles and bears, and whales and worms, Rejoice and praise in diff'rent forms. But when thy face is hid, they mourn, And, dying, to their dust return; Both man and beast their souls resign; Life, breath, and spirit, all is thine. Yet thou canst breathe on dust again, And fill the world with beasts and men; A word of thy creating breath Repairs the wastes of time and death. His works, the wonders of his might, Are honored with his own delight; How awful are his glorious ways! The Lord is dreadful in his praise. The earth stands trembling at thy stroke, And at thy touch the mountains smoke; Yet humble souls may see thy face, And tell their wants to sovereign grace. In thee my hopes and wishes meet, And make my meditations sweet; Thy praises shall my breath employ, Till it expire in endless joy. While haughty sinners die accursed, Their glory buried with their dust, I to my God, my heav'nly King, Immortal hallelujahs sing. Great is the Lord, what tongue can frame An equal honor to his name? Topics: Creation and Providence; God his creation and providence; Praise for creation and providence; Providence in air, earth, and sea; Spring and summer; Works of creation and providence

Bless God, my Soul,; Thou, Lord, alone

Appears in 28 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 104 Lyrics: 1 Bless God, my Soul; thou, Lord, alone Possessest Empire without Bounds, With Honour Thou art crown'd, thy Throne Eternal Majesty surrounds. 2 With Light Thou dost thyself enrobe, And Glory for a Garment take; Heaven's Curtains stretch, beyond the Globe, Thy Canopy of State to make. 3 God builds on liquid Air, and forms His Palace Chambers in the Skies; The Clouds his Chariots are, and Storms The swift-wing'd Steeds with which he flies. 4 As bright as Flame, as swift as Wind, His Ministers Heaven's Palace fill, To have their sundry Tasks assign'd All proud to serve their Sov'reign's Will. 5,6 Earth on her Centre fix'd He set, Her Face with Waters overspread; Nor proudest Mountains dar'd as yet, To lift above the Waves their Head. 7 But when thy awful Face appear'd, Th' insulting Waves dispers'd; they fled, When once thy Thunder's Voice they heard, And by their Haste confess'd their Dread. 8 Thence up by secret Tracks they creep, And gushing from the Mountain's Side, Thro' Vallies travel to the Deep, Appointed to receive their Tide. 9 There hast thou fix'd the Ocean's Bounds, The threatning Surges to repel; That they no more o'erpass their Mounds, Nor to a second Deluge swell. Part II 10 Yet thence in smaller Parties drawn, The Sea recovers her lost Hills; And starting Springs from ev'ry Lawn, Surprize the Vales with plenteous Rills. 11 The Fields tame Beasts are thither led, Weary with Labour, faint with Drought; And Asses on wild Mountains bred, Have Sense to find these Currents out. 12 There shady Trees from scorching Beams, Yield Shelter to the feather'd Throng; They drink, and to the bounteous Streams Return the Tribute of their Song. 13 His Rains from Heav'n parch'd hills recruit, That soon transmit the liquid Store; 'Till Earth is burthen'd with her Fruit, And Nature's Lap can hold no more. 14 Grass, for our Cattle to devour, He makes the Growth of ev'ry Field; Herbs, for Man's Use of various Pow'r, That either Food or Physick yield. 15 With cluster'd Grapes he crowns the vine, To chear Man's Heart opprest with Cares, Give Oil that makes his Face to shine; And Corn, that wasted Strength repairs. Part III 16 The Trees of God, without the Care Or Art of Man, with Sap are fed; The Mountain Cedar looks as fair, As those in royal Gardens bred. 17 Safe in the lofty Cedar's Arm's The Wand'rers of the Air may rest; The hospitable Pine from Harms Protects the Stork, her pious Guest. 18 Wild Goats the craggy Rock ascend, Its tow'ring Heights their Fortress make, Whose Cells in labyrinths extend, Where feebler Creatures Refuge take. 19 The Moon's inconstant Aspect shows Th' appointed Seasons of the Year; Th' instructed Sun his Duty knows, His Hours to rise and disappear. 20,21 Darkness He makes the Earth to shroud, When Forest-Beasts securely stray; Young Lions roar their Wants aloud To Providence, that sends them Prey. 22 They range all Night, on Slaughter bent, 'Till summon'd by the rising Morn, To skulk in Dens with one Consent, The conscious Ravagers return. 23 Forth to the Tillage of the Soil, The Husbandman securely goes, Commencing with the Sun his Toil, With him returns to his Repose. 24 How various, Lord, thy Works are found; For which thy Wisdom we adore! The Earth is with thy Treasure crown'd, 'Till Nature's Hand can grasp no more. Part IV 25 But still, the vast unfathom'd Main Of Wonders a new Scene supplies, Whose Depths Inhabitants contain, Of ev'ry Form and ev'ry Size. 26 Full-freighted Ships from ev'ry Port, There cut their unmolested Way; Leviathan, whom there to sport Thou mad'st, his Compass there to play. 27 These various Troops of Sea and Land, In Sense of common Want agree: All wait on thy dispensing Hand, And have their daily Alms from Thee. 28 They gather what thy Stores disperse, Without their Trouble to provide: Thou op'st thy Hand, the Universe, The craving World is all supply'd. 29 Thou for a Moment hid'st thy Face, The num'rous Ranks of Creatures mourn: Thou tak'st their Breath, all Nature's Race Forthwith to Mother-Earth return. 30 Again thou send'st thy Spirit forth, T'inspire the Mass with vital Seed; Nature's restor'd, and Parent-Earth Smiles on her new-created Breed. 31 Thus through successive Ages stands Firm fix'd thy providential Care; Pleas'd with the Work of thy own Hands, Thou dost the Wastes of Time repair. 32 One Look of thine, one wrathful Look, Earth's panting Breast with Terror fills; One Touch from Thee, with Clouds of Smoak, In Darkness shrouds the proudest Hills. 33 In praising God, while He prolongs My Breath, I will that Breath employ; 34 And join Devotion to my Songs Sincere, as in Him is my Joy: 35 While Sinners from Earth's Face are hurl'd, My Soul, praise thou his holy Name, 'Till with my Song, the list'ning world Join Consort, and his Praise proclaim.

Psalm 104: Bless God, my soul. O Lord my God

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 12 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 104 First Line: Bless God, my soul. O Lord my God Lyrics: 1Bless God, my soul. O Lord my God, thou art exceeding great; With honour and with majesty thou clothed art in state. 2With light, as with a robe, thyself thou coverest about; And, like unto a curtain, thou the heavens stretchest out. 3Who of his chambers doth the beams within the waters lay; Who doth the clouds his chariot make, on wings of wind make way. 4Who flaming fire his ministers, his angels sp’rits, doth make: 5Who earth’s foundations did lay, that it should never shake. 6Thou didst it cover with the deep, as with a garment spread: The waters stood above the hills, when thou the word but said. 7But at the voice of thy rebuke they fled, and would not stay; They at thy thunder’s dreadful voice did haste them fast away. 8They by the mountains do ascend, and by the valley-ground Descend, unto that very place which thou for them didst found. 9Thou hast a bound unto them set, that they may not pass over, That they do not return again the face of earth to cover. 10He to the valleys sends the springs, which run among the hills: 11They to all beasts of field give drink, wild asses drink their fills. 12By them the fowls of heav’n shall have their habitation, Which do among the branches sing with delectation. 13He from his chambers watereth the hills, when they are dry’d: With fruit and increase of thy works the earth is satisfy’d. 14For cattle he makes grass to grow, he makes the herb to spring For th’ use of man, that food to him he from the earth may bring; 15And wine, that to the heart of man doth cheerfulness impart, Oil that his face makes shine, and bread that strengtheneth his heart. 16The trees of God are full of sap; the cedars that do stand In Lebanon, which planted were by his almighty hand. 17Birds of the air upon their boughs do chuse their nests to make; As for the stork, the fir-tree she doth for her dwelling take. 18The lofty mountains for wild goats a place of refuge be; The conies also to the rocks do for their safety flee. 19He sets the moon in heav’n, thereby the seasons to discern: From him the sun his certain time of going down doth learn. 20Thou darkness mak’st, ‘tis night, then beasts of forests creep abroad. 21The lions young roar for their prey, and seek their meat from God. 22The sun doth rise, and home they flock, down in their dens they lie. 23Man goes to work, his labour he doth to the ev’ning ply. 24How manifold, Lord, are thy works! in wisdom wonderful Thou ev’ry one of them hast made; earth’s of thy riches full: 25So is this great and spacious sea, wherein things creeping are, Which number’d cannot be; and beasts both great and small are there. 26There ships go; there thou mak’st to play that leviathan great. 27These all wait on thee, that thou may’st in due time give them meat. 28That which thou givest unto them they gather for their food; Thine hand thou open’st lib’rally, they filled are with good. 29Thou hid’st thy face; they troubled are, their breath thou tak’st away; Then do they die, and to their dust return again do they. 30Thy quick’ning spirit thou send’st forth, then they created be; And then the earth’s decayed face renewed is by thee. 31The glory of the mighty Lord continue shall for ever: The Lord Jehovah shall rejoice in all his works together. 32Earth, as affrighted, trembleth all, if he on it but look; And if the mountains he but touch, they presently do smoke. 33I will sing to the Lord most high, so long as I shall live; And while I being have I shall to my God praises give. 34Of him my meditation shall sweet thoughts to me afford; And as for me, I will rejoice in God, my only Lord. 35From earth let sinners be consum’d, let ill men no more be. O thou my soul, bless thou the Lord. Praise to the Lord give ye.

Your Spirit, O LORD, Makes Life to Abound

Meter: 10.10.11.11 Appears in 9 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 104 Lyrics: 1 Your Spirit, O LORD, makes life to abound. The earth is renewed, and fruitful the ground. To God be all glory and wisdom and might. May God in his creatures forever delight. 2 My soul, praise the LORD! The LORD is most great, with glory arrayed, majestic in state. The light is his garment, the skies form a tent, and over the waters his couriers are sent. 3 He rides on the clouds and wings of the storm. The lightning and wind his mission perform. Foundations of earth he forever has stayed; to cover it, oceans like garments were laid. 4 On mountains and plains the dark waters lay. They heard his rebuke and hurried away. He lifted the mountains, to valleys gave birth, set boundaries for seas that once covered the earth. Repeat stanza 1 5 God causes the springs of water to flow in streams from the hills to valleys below. The LORD gives the streams for all living things there, while birds with their singing enrapture the air. 6 Down mountains and hills your showers are sent. With fruit of your work the earth is content. You give grass for cattle and food for our toil, enriching our labors with bread, wine, and oil. 7 The trees that the LORD has planted are fed, and over the earth their branches are spread. They keep in their shelter the birds of the air. The life of each creature God keeps in his care. Repeat stanza 1 8 The seasons are fixed by wisdom divine. The slow-changing moon shows forth God's design. The sun in its circuit its Maker obeys and, running its journey, hastes not nor delays. 9 The LORD makes the night, when, leaving their lair, the lions go forth, God's bounty to share. The LORD makes the morning, when beasts steal away, when we are beginning the work of the day. 10 How many and wise the works of the LORD! The earth with its wealth of creatures is stored. The sea bears in safety the ships to and fro; Leviathan plays in the waters below. 11 Your creatures all look to you for their food. Your hand opens wide, they gather the good. When you hide your face, LORD, in anguish they yearn; when you stop their breathing, to dust they return. Repeat stanza 1 12 Before the LORD's might earth trembles and quakes. The mountains are rent, and smoke from them breaks. I promise to worship the LORD all my days. Yes, while I have being, my God I will praise. 13 Rejoicing in God, my thought shall be sweet. May sinners depart in ruin complete. My soul, praise the LORD God his name be adored. Come, praise him, all people, and worship the LORD. The Works of the Lord Are Created

Author: Christopher Idle Meter: 12.11.12.11 Appears in 8 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 104 First Line: The works of the Lord are created in wisdom Lyrics: 1 The works of the Lord are created in wisdom! We view the earth's wonders and call him to mind; we hear what he says in the world we discover, and God show his glory in all that we find. 2 Not even the angels have ever been granted to tell the full story of nature and grace; but open to God is all human perception, the mysteries of time and the secrets of space. 3 The sun every morning lights up all creation, the moon marks the rhythm of months in their turn; the glittering stars are arrayed in his honor, adorning the years as they ceaselessly burn. 4 The wind is his breath and the clouds are his signal, the rain and the snow are the robes of his choice; the storm and the lightning, his watchmen and heralds, the crash of the thunder, the sound of his voice. 5 The song is unfinished; how shall we complete it, and where find the skill to perfect all God's praise? At work in all places, he cares for all peoples-- how great is the Lord to the end of all days! God helps the stranger in distress, the widow and the fatherless, and grants the prisoner sweet release. 4 I’ll praise God while I'm granted breath; and when my voice is lost in death, praise shall employ my nobler powers; my days of praise shall ne'er be past, while life and thought and being last, or immortality endures.
