How firm a foundation

Author: Richard Keen Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 2,127 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 52:1-3 First Line: How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord Lyrics: 1 How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent word; what more can he say than to you he hath said, you who unto Jesus for refuge have fled? 2 Fear not, he is with thee, O be not dismayed; for he is thy God, and will still give thee aid; he'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, upheld by his righteous, omnipotent hand. 3 In every condition, in sickness, in health, in poverty's vale, or abounding in wealth; at home and abroad, on the land, on the sea, as thy days may demand shall thy strength ever be. 4 When through the deep waters he calls thee to go, the rivers of grief shall not thee overflow; for he will be with thee in trouble to bless, and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. 5 When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, his grace, all-sufficient shall be thy supply; the flame shall not hurt thee, his only design thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine. 6 The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose, he will not, he cannot, desert to its foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, he never will leave, he will never forsake. He told me no less; The heirs of salvation, I knew from his word, Through much tribulation, Must follow their Lord. 6 How bitter that cup, No heart can conceive, Which he drunk quite up, That sinners might live! His way was much rougher, And darker than mine; Did Jesus thus suffer, And shall I repine? 7 Since all that I meet Shall work for my good, The bitter is sweet, The med'cine is food; Though painful at present, 'Twill cease before long, And then, O how pleasant, The conqueror's song! Schütz, 1640-1690; Frances Cox, 1812-1897 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 194 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 52:7 Lyrics: 1 Sing praise to God who reigns above, the God of all creation, the God of power, the God of love, the God of our salvation. My soul with comfort rich he fills, and every grief he gently stills: to God all praise and glory! 2 What God’s almighty power has made, in mercy he is keeping; by morning glow or evening shade his eye is never sleeping. And where he rules in kingly might, there all is just and all is right: to God all praise and glory! 3 We sought the Lord in our distress; O God, in mercy hear us. Our Savior saw our helplessness and came with peace to cheer us. For this we thank and praise the Lord, who is by one and all adored: to God all praise and glory! 4 Let all who name Christ’s holy name give God the praise and glory. Let all who know his power proclaim aloud the wondrous story. Cast every idol from its throne; the Lord is God, and he alone: to God all praise and glory! Let saints below in concert sing

Author: C. Wesley Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 175 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 52:8 Lyrics: 1 Let saints below in concert sing With those to glory gone; For all the servants of our King In earth and heaven are one. 2 One family--we dwell with him-- One church above, beneath, Though now divided by the stream, The narrow stream of death: 3 One army of the living God, To his command we bow; Part of the host have crossed the flood, And part are crossing now. 4 E'en now to their eternal home Some happy spirits fly; And we are to the margin come, And soon expect to die. 5 E'en now, by faith, we join our hands With those that went before, And greet the ransomed blessed bands Upon th' eternal shore. 6 Lord Jesus! be our constant guide; And, when the word is given, Bid death's cold flood its waves divide, And land us safe in heaven. By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted. 2 Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon thee? Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone thee. 'Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied thee: I crucified thee. 3 Lo, the good Shepherd for the sheep is offered; the slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered; for our atonement, while we nothing heeded, God interceded. 4 For me, kind Jesus, was thy incarnation, thy mortal sorrow, and thy life's oblation; thy death of anguish and thy bitter passion, for my salvation. 5 Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay thee, I do adore thee, and will ever pray thee, think on thy pity and thy love unswerving, not my deserving. My Song Is Love Unknown

Author: Samuel Crossman, c. 1624-83 Meter: 6.6.6.6.4.4.4.4 Appears in 127 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 52:13 Lyrics: 1 My song is love unknown, My Savior’s love to me, Love to the loveless shown That they might lovely be. Oh, who am I That for my sake My Lord should take Frail flesh and die? 2 He came from His blest throne Salvation to bestow; But men made strange, and none The longed-for Christ would know. But, oh, my friend, My Friend indeed, Who at my need His life did spend! 3 Sometimes they strew His way And His sweet praises sing; Resounding all the day Hosannas to their King. Then “Crucify!” Is all their breath, And for His death They thirst and cry. 4 Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, He gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet they at these Themselves displease And 'gainst Him rise. 5 They rise and needs will have My dear Lord made away; A murderer they save, The Prince of Life they slay. Yet cheerful He To suff'ring goes That He His foes From thence might free. 6 In life no house, no home My Lord on earth might have; In death no friendly tomb But what a stranger gave. What may I say? Heav'n was His home But mine the tomb Wherein He lay. 7 Here might I stay and sing, No story so divine! Never was love, dear King, Never was grief like Thine. This is my friend, In whose sweet praise I all my days Could gladly spend! Topics: Redeemer Used With Tune: LOVE UNKNOWN

God Is Working His Purpose Out

Author: Arthur C. Ainger, 1841-1919 Meter: Irregular Appears in 93 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 52:7 Lyrics: 1 God is working his purpose out, as year succeeds to year: God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near. Nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 From the east to utmost west, where human feet have trod, by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God, "Give ear to me, you continents, you isles, give ear to me, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea." 3 March we forth in the strength of God, with the banner of Christ unfurled, that the light of the glorious Gospel of truth may shine throughout the world. Fight we the fight with sorrow and sin to set their captives free, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 4 All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed. Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed. Yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. Used With Tune: PURPOSE

My Lord, all grace supplying, O turn your face on me! 3 Your sinless soul's oppression was all for sinners' gain; mine, mine was the transgression, but yours the deadly pain: I bow my head, my Saviour, for I deserve your place; O grant to me your favour, and heal me by your grace. 4 What language shall I borrow to thank you, dearest Friend, for this your dying sorrow, your mercy without end? Lord, make me yours for ever: your servant let me be; and may I never, never betray your love for me. Topics: Holy Week (Good Friday) Used With Tune: PASSION CHORALE Text Sources: rev.
